I would check with the website of the maker of the drive, I know I have a Sony flash drive and a Verbatim flash drive that came with a pre loaded app that would password protect the drive I don't use them but you might find something that way.

I have used U3 in the past, and it sounds kind of like what you are looking for. When you insert the flash drive, the autorun will open it up and prompt for a password. If autorun is disabled on the machine, then you can still launch it manually from My Computer.

The only thing I don't like about U3 is it has caused some issues with removing the drive from the computer, most people don't eject it, but even the ones that do, don't know that U3 loads as two disks so both need to be ejected and that I have seen do some damage to files on drives.

Ther other question that was posed to me is what about restriction on USB formatting? Anyone with a thumb drive can walk up to a computer, stick in the drive and format. Is there a way to prevent this?

What are you trying to protect? Are you trying to prevent users from formatting USB drives? Why? They can just delete things on them if they have write-rights, what difference does formatting the USB drive make?

Basically, you load your Chrome Profile from an encrypted volume using Veracrypt residing in the computer or your external USB drive. When you're done, close Chrome and simply unmount the volume. You can do similar for Windows or Mac OS but specifics may differ. You may need admin privileges to mount/unmount.
