Dear all,

There is a site reps' meeting on Monday, do you have anything you would like me to bring up?

I'm already going to raise a discussion on behalf of one plot holder about poly tunnels, as they are formally permitted on other allotment sites.

yours

Nick

Hi Nick

There was one thing I (and my neighbours) are interested in, can Kier confirm that the tree line next to plot 29 will be scheduled as part of this winter's programme?

For the last two years the tree line has been on Kier's wish list as they block a lot of natural light to several plots.

With many thanks

David Wilkins.

I can 'ask' but I thought you said the other day

"Unfortunately Kier are unable to cut the tree-line next to my plot (plot 29). Kier have agreed that I can trim the tree branches invading my airspace."

I would expect a load of &^&$ about health and safety and how they can't get to it with a flail machine.

In the plot on the other side taken presently, as that would give them access.

Hi Nick

Kier had the funding to cut the tree line down to a hedge but they had staff off sick, which is just one of those things that you cannot control.

With Kier undergoing a large hedge programme in the town our tree line was on the wish list of jobs to be done. Unfortunately the chappies with chainsaws were deployed elsewhere.

The work has been agreed and there is money to sort out the trees; it is simply a question of it being put into the schedule and being actioned.  It may be done this winter but I would like it raised to ensure that it is actually in this year's winter programme. There is no way I could reach with a tree lopper.

From what I can see, the plot next to me has now been taken (there are a few new faces onsite) which means they will be in shade from lunchtime onwards each day.

With regards

Dave.

Did anyone lose a pair of red seceteurs the weekend before last, dropped
about 1/3 the way in from the main gate?
I picked them up but forgot to email out, and very few people about this
weekend.

Let me know if they're yours

Hi yes these are ours must have fallen from my pocket. Steve and Siobhan new owners of plot 24 previously on plots 25b. I wondered if had and was a bit annoyed since they're brand new. Let us know when you might be there next to collect them.

Thanks. Steve.

Hi Victoria
Not sure if you got my husbands message regarding the secateurs. Are you planning to go to the allotment over the Easter weekend so that we could perhaps meet you there to collect them.
Kind regards Siobhan

Leigh, just the person I wanted to try and grab. :)

I've been trying to get in touch regarding your chickens.
Everyone is rather concerned about them, as every time we see them they have no food or water. People have been giving them allotment pickings, and I've given them layers' pellets (which they dived into), but we can't guarantee there will always be someone available to look after them.

More worrying, there has been a fox sighted, and by all accounts it seems to be actually living on your plot! There appears to be no anti-fox digging prevention - we've done what we can with the bits and pieces that are there, but there are lots of places where a determined fox could get in. (I did get Daniel to go wee around the coop, which we get the boys to do at home, and it really does seem to work, but it's been raining, so won't last long)

We're down to 4 chickens at home, so we have plenty of room - would you like me to take your chickens home until you can properly fox-proof your coop?

Hi Victoria

That would be brilliant if you can look after them, I only took them on from a neighbour who needed to rehome them quickly and I’ve been struggling with work and an arm injury as well as not living at home (due to building work).
I have some layer pellets and grit if you want me to drop them round.

Many thanks
Leigh

That's fine, I'll go and pick them up tonight or tomorrow night when they are asleep (best time to introduce new ones). Hopefully they will be safe until then.(then I will be home all day Friday to keep an eye on them - our girls are all getting quite old, so there shouldn't be any fuss, but the 10 year old bantam is actually a bit mean, so she may give them a bit of a peck once she notices them)

Hi Victoria

How are the chickens doing?
If you give your address I can bring round that food and grit that I have.
Hopefully I should be able to get down the allotment in the next couple of weeks and sort out their living arrangements.

Thanks
Leigh

Hey Leigh

Please don't put chickens back at the allotment. There were many people looking after them because you were rarely there. But now with winter, allotment goers are few and far between.

At Victoria and Nick's place, they are safe, looked after and fox-proof. Please think of the birds welfare first.

Thanks, Anya

Hi anya

If you look at the back of my allotment there is a big walk in cage that I need to finish for them to go in.
The reason I haven’t been down there much is because I had a bad back and am now in a situation to get back down regular again.
I am fully aware of how to look after chickens and only had these 2 as my neighbour was getting rid of them and thought I was ready to get back to my plot.

Thanks for your concern

Leigh

Hiya Leigh

I think that it's a shame that you are going to put them back before you've even cleared the allotment. I've been there 4 years and never seen you there or your plot clear. I also think when you were reported to the council by one of the allotment holders that they wanted you to get permission before putting chickens on the plot. You need to get permission, otherwise I think you're in breach of your terms.

In all seriousness can you please wait until you are in a position to guarantee that you can be there, especially in the winter. For example, are you able to get there 1-2 times a day just to make sure their water isn't frozen and they've enough to eat? I think it's a fair question as those chickens would've died if the other allotment holders hadn't looked after them. I myself fed them often and with the help of another, tried to block the holes the foxes were digging.

These are creatures that will suffer without your commitment, and there is no excuse for that if there is someone already willing to look after them properly.

Regards, Anya

Please read my email again regarding going down regularly.
I already have permission from when I had chickens before.
I have not been down there for a year and before that I wasn’t regular as I was working all over the country supporting my family.
I’ve never been reported to the council either, so that’s interesting that you mention that.
Please stop emailing me now

Am sorry you feel so put out Leigh.

You need to get permission before you keep chickens. You've not had chickens since I've been at the allotment for 4 years. Maybe rules may have changed? It's irrelevant anyway as the person at the allotment was told that you need permission to keep chickens, in writing I think.  Someone else down the allotment phoned the council when it became apparent that the chickens were not being cared for. I don't blame them, do you?   A LOT of people were appalled and concerned and will not be happy to see them back there, uncared for.

As I said, please put yourself aside and make sure the chickens come first. We have a duty to look after animals in our care and you have not done this so far. I am sorry if I offend you, but I only have the birds interest at heart.

Please don't put the chickens back.

Anya.

Please don't put chickens down there. You've not looked after the allotment, you've not looked after the chickens. Nothing you say has given me much hope. You need to be there every day to look after them, you didn't do that in the summer. If you had truly cared, you would've found a way to get to them, or asked a friend or family member to look after them.

It was the kindness of allotment holders who kept those chickens alive and safe, not you.
