Dear Nick,

Is it possible to find out about apparently deserted sheds on the allotment site?
There are two opposite our plot, one large green and one smaller with the door open. We would dearly love to have one if they are up for grabs.

Another question,Nick, do the council strim the main paths through the site and the communal area at the bottom? Its becoming difficult to walk there at the moment. Perhaps you could let me know.

We are really enjoying our first venture into "allotmenting" and cant wait until we reap the benefits.

Hi Sandra,

Dear Nick,

Is it possible to find out about apparently deserted sheds on the allotment site?

It is the usual case that if someone leaves a plot.

a - they try to sell their shed
b - if anything is left on the plot a month after someone leaves it reverts to the ownership of "the allotment", this is written into the agreement somewhere. I have seen it.
c - The situation with sheds is generally different, they stay with the plots.and the plots are leased 'with' the sheds
d - Those plots with sheds are leased currently as I understand it, but I will check.
e - I have 'dibs' on the green potting shed with the big windows if things change :-)

They cut the grass on 'a schedule' what this schedule is I have no idea and every time I've asked the previous woman who worked in keir would get stroppy. I will ask when its going to get done.
I got so annoyed that I took my lawnmower to the plot and mowed down as far as my plot.
They are supposed to cut the inside of the hedge by the main gate too, but they seem to have forgotten to do that.

ah good good, keep up the hard work.

Oh. I see some people have mowed further. If you want to borrow my mower to carve a path to your plot, my number is 077 307 357 52.

Dear Nick,
Thank you for offering to lend us your lawn mower. Not sure yet as we may be able to borrow a petrol strimmer - if that doesn't happen, we would be very grateful if you could lend us yours.
I have an electric mower at home but cant quite work out  how may miles of cable I would need from the Oxleys to Chippingfield !!!!
Will be in touch soon.

no problem.

can strim but it takes ages and you get lumpy results.

I'm generally around this week.

Nick,

Do you know if we are still allowed to fill our water butt with a hose?

Wait for Nick to confirm, but I believe we're /not/ allowed to during the
hosepipe ban. :-(
(Although I think you can at home, under the terms of the ban)

The council sent me a letter saying that we were not allowed to. I was under the impression that this was not the case with the water company, from my reading of their rules, and tried to contact them (the water company) for clarification, but they did not reply.

Hi Nick,

Disaster has struck!!!!!

All brassicas have had their leaves eaten since Wednesday evening ( its now Friday morning ).  Don't know if any can be saved yet. Thought it may have been rabbits but another allotment holder said that was unlikely and it was probably clouds of little black fly. We've learned  a lesson there and will spray, spray and spray again.

I bet it was slugs. Have you tried nematodes?

Would have thought it's more likely to be pigeons, so net-net-net.
Then next it'll be caterpillars, which tends to be pick-and-squish.
:-(
It's a never-ending fight against the brassica-munchers, which seem
to be pretty much everything except Nick.

At least it wasn't human related....the only cauli i had that had actually formed a decent head has had it removed...by what looks like a knife....along with the tops of my broccoli plants. All nice straight cuts....

Maybe this year ill actually get to enjoy the fruits of my labour (no pun intended)...last year it was all my strawberries and garlic that disappeared....

Thanks

John

oh no... I don't suppose you reported it to the police did you? It might seem a bit minor to bother the police with, but its better to keep their records right, then sometime they might catch the little blighters doing it. David had a whole crop of onions go a couple of years ago, as a result he more or less gave up for 3 months. On other occassions we've had shed trashed, tools stolen, windows broken, etc etc...

The council will only improve security if we have recognised incidents, so if you hear of incidents happening, please inform me so I can raise them with the council of proof that we have an issue.

Well I have had my shed broken into too and a fold up chair, of all things, stolen as well as the windows broken.

Wasn't actually worried about the chair, it was the mindless vandalism of the shed. They didn't go in through the door but instead decided to rip planks from the back of the shed panel meaning i had some significant repairs to undertake. none of it reported, cant imagine that the police would have been that worried about it...

Speaking of giving up for 3 months ... popped over in the rain today to see how
things were, and there are huge weeds /everywhere/! I guess I was too happy to
see the wet and warm to make the plants grow, it slipped my mind that weeds are
also plants. :-(

I've got 3 solitary carrots coming up (ironically, 2 of them stuck together)
in a bed of thistles, the potatoes are over-run with a huge variety of weeds
that weren't there a week ago! That horrid sticky grass stuff coming all
through the currants and gooseberries. And we won't even mention the twitch.

But Daniel found our first pea today!

I forgot to put the poster on the gates. :-(
But the Old Harlow Gardenign Club annual show is tomorrow.
Please come along, preferably to have a go (20p/entry, and sometimes
there are no entries!! So you can't go wrong really. Unless you miss
the stage-by time of 11.45!), but if not then come and buy a raffle
ticket when the results/show opens at 1.30 - 4.something.

Hope to see a lot of you tomorrow. With or without your spuds.
