Hi all,
I'm told that you will have had a phone call and/or a letter about the upcoming garage removal on the side of the allotments.

I've just been talking to the site manager, Martin. He has said that we should expect to be able to get to the gate with vehicles for the duration. They have a 6 week window in which to do the job, from the 25th of January, and this is weather dependant, but they hope to be able to complete the task sooner.

I highlighted concerns about the asbestos roofs and the dangers of the dust to crops (and therefore people eating them) during removal and he assured me that it was understood and in hand. Apparently they use a water bowser to spray the area with fine water droplets to prevent the dust from rising and that they hope to take the roofs down from inside which is safer in this regard.

We should still be getting the manure delivery on the 8th from pets corner, which is on their records too.

This will effect Eugene's plot as they need to erect construction fencing 6ft on from the garage to allow for works - they are attempting to contact Eugene about this.

I am happy to raise any other concerns as your rep, but otherwise you are free to contact them 01279 446829; I think Laura is the person in the office fielding calls and Martin is the site manager who will deal with things on site.

hope this helps

yours

Nick

6ft, cor blimey! That's half my allotment out of action for 6 weeks.

Six weeks seems a long time to demolish the garages ? They demolished the garages near the high street in about 2 weeks.

Yes, received a call from Martin this morning on the answer machine, will contact him in the morning.

Also aim the clear a wide border running beside the garages this weekend.

Eugene - if you're feeling short of space, get in touch with Kirstie on
the plot next to you, as I'm sure she'd be more than happy to share for
the season.

If you want me to pass your email address on to her, I can do that.

That could be an idea if you wouldn't mind contacting her that would be
appreciated.

For Chippingfield allotment owners information.

Spoke to Martin Scarry this morning at the allotment. He explained how
the temporary fencing panels will be set out surrounding the garages.

BE AWARE... There will be no parking near to the allotments gate as most
of the garage area will be fenced off, for 6 weeks from next week.

The allotments will be accessed by a narrow walkway running alongside
the hedge leading to the gate.

Good morning all

One thing I would recommend to everyone is to make sure they clear down their sheds and pick any produce that can be frozen.

I have lost all of my parsnips; most of my swede and a healthy chunk of purple sprouting Brocolli.

I went back a few days later and more swede have gone - I have the leftovers.(!)

Derek (opposite Eugene) has also reported that someone had been helping themselves. He also said that he was talking to one of the residential neighbours (who I believe used to have a plot) and they said they saw someone taking an 'unhealthy interest' in the sheds.

Any temporary fencing will wet peoples' appetites (no pun intended) and the light-fingered brigade could utilise the opportunity to help themselves.

We unfortunately lost some Sweetcorn during the summer along with beans and of course whole pepper plants.

Poor Susan and Allen had their allotment stripped, including their four little pumpkin plants - roots et al.

Strawberries have also gone missing this summer. I have forgotten the name of the chap (they are new this year) and he works with Suzzane Prunty.

Hope all is well.

Dave. (Plot 29)

Thanks for that mail Dave; summing up all the thefts is useful (hopefully).

I have forwarded it on to Suzanne and Darren, asking 'again'

 - to have our locks changed (we're on the todo list for at least a year for this after 'that person' left - and this has been done for another council run plot),
 - to have the tree line by your plot to be cut down to increase neighbour visibility of the lower part of the plot (as is on the todo list for at least 9 months)
 - to have extended fencing above the small gate to prevent people using it to easily step over (on the todo list for 36 months now I think)

I'm not sure what else we can do to prevent these thefts - any suggestions are welcome. Please note, we are not allowed barbed wire, razor wire, anything electrified.

We could put Marshmallow on patrol, she gives a nasty nip!
