Iam trying to find a plugin for Photoshop CS6 that will allow me to view and save in the webp format. I have tried several sources, and they either don't work, or only allow me to save as in webp format. I have been placing all attempted plugins here:
It works for me in CS6 are you sure you installed the Plug-in in CC 2019 and also in CS6. I install thirt party 32bit and 64Bit Photoshop Plug-ins in my 32bit and 64bit Plug-in trees. I link all Photoshop version Plug-in folder to my Plug-in trees All version of Photoshop use the same third party plug-in files.
I thought I would contact google asking why dont they produce a fix, one that works all ways, but its impossible to get hold of them, and all their preset issues to choose from dont mention webp. They expect prog developers to provide their own fixes yet here we are relying on independent folk to do so when Adobe should have pulled their fingers out and provided us with such.
Great that the latest Photoshop has "full" webp support, but lacking is the ability to export artboards to webp format. I build a lot of my website graphics as artboards, but it looks like I will need an intermediary step of saving the artboards as PSD files first, and then exporting them as webp? Or am I missing something?
@Stephen_A_Marsh Solved! Your script works perfectly. The problem was that I had the "Open As Layer" event running in the Script Events Manager. Turning that off solved the errors I was getting, plus a whole heap of other stuff relating to exporting artboards. I rely hugely on Open As Layer to help document my compositing workflow, but hadn't connected the dots to its impact on other scripts. But it's easy to toggle the event on and off as needed. Thank you so much for all your help on this, and
Wow thank you for the script! I got it installed without problem, but when I run it, I get this error when the first psb file (generated from the first artboard) is created. I'm running the latest PS.
I tried again with another document with multiple artboards with the same result. I then created a very basic doc with 2 artboards with just one simple layer on each (no linked files, no smart objects), with the same error.
I had also the error The command "Select" is not currently available, then "The was an unexpected error with yhe ungroupLayers function!" and finally the alert in attachment. In my case I had an empty artboard. I've added a solid-color fill layer and it solved !

Hi Stephen_A_Marsh,
This is awesome! Really helpful, thank you.
One question I had was around the filenaming and wondered if it was possible to add that functionality into this script.
Usually, when we export Artboards to Files, there is an additional pop up (attached) which allows you to add a prefix to the filename, rather than taking the Artboard name. I wondered if it's possible to add that pop up on this export functionality at all? It's not critical but would help the process of filenaming and organisation.
I checked the Artboards to Files jsx file and could see part of the functionality but I'm not saavy enough to work out how to add that to your awesome script.
Really appreciate your work on this!
Thanks so much!
Yes, this is possible. Please provide a cropped image of the layers panel with all artboards visible (they can be collapsed) and the final output names, making it clear which is the doc name and which is the added prefix or suffix.
Hi @Stephen_A_Marsh
Awesome, thank you. I've included 3 files to show the process of how I export currently Artboards to Files with the prefix.
01 - This shows the Artboards and the layers as you requested. The artboards are called, Landscape, Portrait and Sqaure.
02 - This shows the pop up where I specify a prefix for the file name.
03 - This shows the output of the files in Explorer but in PNG format
03 - (3 images) - Correct output filenames but PNG
Hi @Stephen_A_Marsh
Hope all is well with you! It's me again
The script has been working like a dream and it works super well.
One issue we've encountered with our workflow is that OG images don't support webp in all platforms and this is causing us a bit of an issue, so in fact it seems we need both WebP formats and Jpeg formats.
Ideally we could export both from the same script so it minimises our workflow.
Is there someway the script could be adapted to also output JPG format too? Or is this a bit much?
Worth an ask at least.
Hey so I have pretty awesome pagespeeds with Webflow, but Google recommends I use WebP format to increase loading speed. Is this possible with Webflow? I tried uploading a .jpf file to webflow and it didnt appear.
yeah safari just announced webp and all the major browsers (chrome, firefox and all the chromium based) are already in beta with avif image and video support. So the story loops again, google pagespeed will soon scream for no avif usage
Shopify automatically serves WebP images to improve the performance and delivery of visuals on your clients' stores. Learn the ins and outs of using WebP versus progressive JPEGs, and how it affects merchants' stores.
Preview on the Mac has saved me, too. But for large quantities of .webp files my workflow stalls to a crawl. If this file format is growing and here to stay, PLEASE support it in Photoshop & InDesign. Or convince google to abandon it. (they're actually pretty good at abandoning things)

WebP is a new image file created by Google. Unlike the traditional formats such as JPG, PNG, and GIF, WebP provides you with high-quality images, but with much smaller file sizes than traditional formats allow.
The process for opening a WebP file is simple. With several clicks, you can enable your Photoshop to open, edit and even save images in .webp format. Nevertheless, you must first save all work and close Photoshop if it is opened.
If you are using Photoshop 23.2, congratulations! The newer Photoshop has full support for the WebP file format! WebP files can now be opened, created, edited, and saved in Photoshop without the need for a plug-in or preference setting.
I used the format many years ago for game texture compressions with rgba channels in a custom game engine. The compressions were outstanding but the software support and use were very limited in my experience. So i had to create my own tools to decode atlasses to webp as well.
I think WebP is great for lossless compression where it readily beats PNG in both compression ratio and decompression speed. For lossy compression though, the upcoming Jpeg XL looks to be the best candidate by far, also it might be that Jpeg XL lossless will end up beating WebP lossless.
Not for me. If it says ".webp" in the dialog it saves as that no matter what browser I try to save the image with. Some of my image editing software that I use (PhotoFiltre Studio X) and even Windows 10's Photo will not display them.
In the last week, a great deal of the product images are now .webp instead of jpg. I use chrome and have tested from 3 different computers. It is most annoying. After making a purchase, I always create a folder with the readme and product images and most of the images at the Daz store are webp.
Admittedly this is a pain because most programs don't natively support it (yet?). I use Photoshop and had to get a plugin to get WebP to work in it so it is frustrating to suddenly have this crop up without warning. And Firefox also doesn't work for me, forces the WebP file type.
Anyways as a slight workaround, You can install Google's WebP codec which allows WebP to work in Window's 10 Photo Viewer (and this will allow the pictures to properly display in Windows Explorer as well). Instructions here:
I normally use firefox, and recently I've saved some pictures and they won't have an icon and later when I try to open them with Photoshop, PS will say they are unsupported and can't be opened. It turns out that firefox saved them as a jpg but they are really webp files. I have found if I go to the same website on Chrome and save the same image that it will be saved as a jpg with an icon and Photoshop will be able to open the file.
After doing some research online, I have found that there are some Photoshop plugins that will allow you to open the webp and convert it. I have first had to change the file extension to webp from jpg for the pictures that don't have icons. It does work, but it is so much easier to switch to Chrome and save it as a real jpg in the first place. So that's what I do.
