If you go to -forge/sound-forge-pro/?_oB=sound-forge-pro and scroll down to the purchase options, select Upgrade and follow the purchase path. It should ask you to type in your existing SoundForge Pro serial number (which should be on your proof of purchase) and then the process will advise you if you are eligible for the upgrade pricing.
Most of the legacy SF versions will run on Win10. Which version do you have? If you know your old login details for SCS, you can still find your SCS serial numbers and download from the SCS legacy site, The old SCS login info should work in Magix. If all else fails, you cam try contacting the Magix Customer Service Sales Team which handles activation issues and such.
Or.. have the serial .. and.. have access to the sellers email account.. which is unlikely. With the serial code alone, Sound Forge cannot be activated unless it is unregistered prior. The serial code and email address are paired, so be aware of this fact if purchasing a 'pre-owned' SF product.
The same applies to Vegas family of products.
The version of Sound Forge I have been using since 2010 up until now was Sound Forge 9 and I have to say, it was much better and far more powerful than this version of Sound Forge (Audio Studio 14). It seems all Magix has done over the years was increase the price and remove half the features.
No longer is there an option to play back audio with the effects chain in real-time (the old SoundForge had a button to the right of the PLAY button that allowed you to do this, but it has since been removed). Now the only way you hear anything with third-party VST effects is to go up to the "FX Favorites" and apply an FX chain. I'm aware you can "Preview" the chain before printing it, but this is far less flexible as you have to play it back from the same position every time and you can't switch between different audio files frequently when doing that, which makes mastering difficult. It is clear the people who design this pitiful software are out of touch. Why they would remove the feature I don't know.
And then they arbitrarily removed the feature to open or save MP3 files. This software is basically an overpriced, and inferior version of Audacity, which is free. Absolutely waste of money...
It's either that or all these features they took away they probably have but now you have to pay extra for.
I got AS14 for $40, which I regard as an absolute steal. I think it's pretty ridiculous to compare AS14 to Audacity, which can't run any of my VST plugs, and, on top of that, doesn't have ARA 2 support. I've been using AS14 in tandem with Spectralayers for about a week now in ARA 2 mode. What a revelation. I could do the same thing with Reaper, but not with Audacity.
As was previously stated, AS is a scaled down version at a significantly lower cost than SF Pro. See Magix Sound Forge version comparison table.
Audio Studio) supports opening and encoding MP3s, something is amiss with your setup. See the below link for posts with possible solutions.
-forge-audio-studio-will-not-open-my-mp3-file--1253057/.
Some of workflow was changed (starting w/ Pro 11) but nothing has been removed, except for the 'remote record ' window option. The plug-in chainer's UI is different (modal), but nothing was removed from it. A few folks have MP3 issues, but the codec was not 'removed' either.
I didnt mean the MP3 option - I meant the removed effects chain button at the bottom of the waveform window and the ability to easily add some effects and then preview and finally render within the same window. Or did I miss something?
Since SF Pro 11, the Fx chainer has been modal. If you like the legacy UI and plug-in automation is not needed, you must first select "Apply Plug-in Chain" in the 'Fx Favorites' menu. Unfortunately, plugin automation envelopes are not available in this mode.
In the timeline chainer mode, it is often better to edit and work on audio in the SF project mode ('Save as' .. SF Pro project ..*.frg). 'Render as' when satisfied with the editing and processing. This non-destructive editing mode does not change the original file(s). If you do not use the project file mode, 'Save as' renders a new processed file.
I fell for the upgrade scam as well, coming from Sound Forge Audio Studio 10. One might think that in the 6 years since original purchase, an upgrade might be worthwhile. Why you would upgrade to remove features I'm not sure. SFAS10 still works fine, and is still available on Amazon etc. for anyone that finds this post.
And for anyone that tries this. Instead of clicking round and round and round and round and round and round following the links on the website, you have to reply to your email confirmation. Because reputable and trustworthy companies always obscure their return process like that, yes sir
I had an old version of Soundforge I had purchased that did EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED IT TO DO. But a new computer changed that and I just bought the new version but it doesn't show how to do "markers to regions" like the old version. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
I can't believe that the program I had did the only thing I needed it to do and now I just spent almost $50 for another Soundforge version that doesn't do what I need? It says an upgrade is close to $200 more! For crying out loud. What a damned rip off. All I want is to drop an audio wave concert in the program, drop in chapter markers and burn a damned CD like I have done hundreds of times with my old program. FURIOUS.
@Neal-Williams Some additional information. If you registered your old version of Sound Forge with Sony your account was transferred to Magix. Simply visit Magix.com and login with your Sony login credentials. You should find your old version of Sound Forge as your product. Simply download and install it. If it runs on your new computer you don't need to buy a new version.
It's just been a waste of money for me. Live and learn. I'm not a professional and I have no need to spend that much money on something that I rarely do. I have had hundreds of live tapes I have converted to CD over the past many years, and there are only a few left to do. I'm 70 and this was simply a waste of money. Thank you everyone for your comments. And expensive paperweight! I even spent the extra for the backup CD!
Sound Forge Audio Studio does not include the 'Markers-to-Regions' tool. You could insert regions manually using the current makers for reference though, double-clicking selects the waveform between two markers, then simply create a region using the "R" key (Insert> Region) and repeat. Not as fast and easy as the tool, but a viable work around.
You could also install your old Sony version if you still have the activation code. all the info was ported over to Magix after the acquisition was finalized. I have had SF-9 installed and activated on a Win10 PC and did not experience any difficulties/
If you purchased SFAS-17 within the last 30 days, you can 'request' a refund or request the refund be applied to an upgrade to SF Pro 17. Magix sales staff is usually very accommodating to such requests.
My mistake for not researching, so I'll keep it. I just found that I had made the same purchase a couple of years ago! Don't get old. You forget things, dislike change and get cranky! Thanks for your help.
When using Sound Forge and playing back files I always get a small click/pop on play start. Sometimes it seems part of the audio is skipped too, especially at start of the file. It doesn't happen when playing with loop mode when the file starts over. And with Nuendo I never have any problems, only Sound Forge (version 9.0e) and when starting playback, no matter where in the timeline.
Also, this happens with both my quad core desktop and dual core laptop, both with Windows XP SP3. I also remember the same thing occurred with Multiface (1st edition) I have in my studio, when I used it with PCI-card, the same quad core desktop and Sound Forge.
The drivers and firmware are current. I've tried fooling around with different driver options in Sound Forge, even changed some buffer options but it doesn't help or maybe I just don't know the correct combination.
This problem is a minor nuisance when playing back whole songs but when checking out small files like sound effects it is highly annoying as I can't really be sure whether the click is in the file or not. Skipping parts of audio makes it even worse.
Even more disconcerting, jumping around in a long file using a mouse clicks (especially at 96kHz) will occasionally produce a brief burst of digital noise - like playing back 'non-audio' data. It is not in the RME drivers because it appears on the playback meters within SF. Seems like disc I/O screws up - like using the wrong buffer. Me and my DAW builder have not been able to track this down so far.
It seems Sound Forge 10 has indeed solved this problem! Not perfectly, though. Using ASIO drivers creates a weird effet - when stopping playback, SF seems to repeat some buffer creating a delayed pattern, like a last beat of the bar is repeated. Luckily, using MME drivers this doesn't happen at all and the clicks/pops are gone.
Be aware of the upgrade offer though - VAT gets added to the price in the last pages of transaction (EU VAT for me, living in Finland) and there's no special field to insert EU VAT number of your company to get rid of this extra cost. I kind of wonder where the EU VAT cost really goes when billed by US based company. I'm guessing to Sony's pocket. Consumer service form is full of annoying little questions like version numbers and such which are not related to purchase details at all. I won't even bother...
It seems after Sony purchased Sound Forge, the software has been getting buggier, updates are not that common, new versions cost more and add less interesting features - topped with cumbersome customer service. I just hope they won't ruin this once great software in the long run...
