Acontinuous beep is stating that you have a hardware fault. As suggested it could be the keyboard. Disconnect it and see if beep sound goes. If not that then disconnect other items and see the effects. Look at the ports to see if any are damaged. It is a case of eliminating one piece of hardware at a time until you discover the cause.
I've had an XPS 13 2 in 1 for a few weeks now and every so often (a few times a day) it makes a loud beep for a half second. I cant tell if it is coming from the speakers or from something else in the system, but its extremely loud and sharp no matter what the volume setting is at. This isnt the coil whine issue, which I do hear sometimes when the computer is plugged in but it doesn't really bother me. Has anybody else had this issue with their XPS 9365? Is there some way to fix it?
Yeah it happened pretty infrequently before but now its happening more and more often which is concerning.. and yeah it doesnt seem to emanate from the speakers. To me it sounds like its coming from the keyboard so I was wondering if it is possibly coming from the motherboard or something
I have had the same issue. No specifics about what would cause it. The laptop is usually been on a while, not very hot as far as I can tell. If memory serves it's only happened when plugged in. Usually happens about twice a day, and it is not from the speakers, and the PC is muted. Someone in the other forums mentioned it may be the SSD overheating, but I can't confirm that.
On my system the sound seemed to come from the area around the Backspace key. In that area is the M.2 SSD and SD card reader. Not sure why either of those would make a noise and since you probably cannot do anything about the SSD, maybe try putting in or taking out an SD card.
While I'm no computer expert, considering that the issue started the day our motherboard was replaced because of a faulty headphone jack, I blame the motherboard for the beeps. Still, Dell refuses to change the motherboard again because of this new (and worse) issue.
I have the same issue. Loud laser/beep sound. Updated BIOS and other updates available but it didn't solve the issue. It happened 8-10 times to me since I received my unit, Feb. 14th. Twice happened while the lid is close. Other incident happened while on idle. 3 beeps happened today within 20mins time!
I just heard it again. I am going to say it seems to happen when the system is in or transitioning to a configuration other than laptop. This last instance it was in tablet mode and before that, tent mode..
I have mine since Thursday last week and have obviously been intensively using the machine over the Weekend. I heared the noise 5 times already also completely unrelated to any activitiy. Other than that the machine runs perfectly smooth. Waiting for a Response from Dell Service.
As I am based in Germany - i could be returning the machine without reason the next 30 days and just simply order a new one but it's really annoying as i've already spend several hours on Settings and do need if for University. What would you do?
It's the 9365 2-in-1 configuration with i5, 8GB and 256GB SSD. It's definitely a Mainboard sound and not coming from the speakers. It might be related to using Touch, Pen and Keyboard in close temporal sequence. But i wouldn't bet on it.
I have quite annoying problem with my laptop. I leave it running pretty much all the time but with turning off and locking the screen. Unfortunately, one the system goes into lock mode it starts to play default beep sound once in a while. I tried to catch it by getting to the computer immediately after it happens but it still requires some time (get from sofa to my desk, unlock screen with fingerprint)... anyway, there's no notification there.
How can I find what triggers that sound to resolve the issue? I don't want to fully disable the sound because I want keep getting reasonable notifications. Instead I want to find out what is it informing me about and address it somehow.
I had a look at the Sounds tab and found that the two common beeps I would hear during the screen lock were associated with device connect and disconnect. I have an external monitor, so guessing that may be the culprit. Since I dont really care for any system notifications, I have now disabled them (I had the option of Windows default or no sound in the Control Panel/Sound/Sounds tab, and that seems to have quieted things down!
I'd also be interested to know if unplugging everything you can then waiting a while to see if the beep persists. After an indeterminate, non-specific amount of time later, reattach the devices one by one and wait for beeps in order to narrow it down.
The beeps are coming from the drive itself (not the internal speaker). After the computer boots into Windows the beeping can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours to start. The beeping continues every 30-60 minutes throughout the day.
Considering this behavior has been repeated across different systems and replacement drives then perhaps it would be best to contact WD Support about this for assistance. You can reach them using the following link:
I understand that your WD Black (Mobile) is making beeping sound with Dell systems. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. I will certainly assist you with best of my resources and knowledge.
This issue could arise due not enough power to the drive, or faulty cable. As you have already checked these drives and these disk does not give errors on various tests, this issue might be related to computer system that you are using with the drive.
If the drives are in warranty and showing errors, we will be more than happy to replace it for you. Also if the drives are OEM drives then you need to contact your device manufacturer for replacement.
Thanks for the response. The issue is definitely not related to power or faulty cables, as I have moved the suspect drives to known-working computers and the issue still persists. Also, once the drive has been replaced the beeping stops.
If anyone is still puzzled by this issue, it seems to have been fixed by a firmware update available on the Dell support site. The firmware that came installed on the numerous WD3200LPLX drives in our Dell Latitude E6440 laptops is version 02.01A02. There have been at least two software updates placed on the Dell support site. I installed version 04.01A04 and no longer have the beeping issue.
I've seen many posts about the 3 long beeps 4 short beeps on startup issue, with varying results. My issue is definitely power supply related. I order an identical PS to the original (579799-001), which did not fix the issue. I tried a 90W HP supply (608428-003) with smart pin and this one solves the problem. No beeps, boots right up. However, this is not a permanent fix, as its underpowered. I also used a PS from a 23-h027c (677762-002) which worked fine. No beeps, boots right up. The common problem is the 579799-001 PS, which causes the issue. I am struggling to figure out what the issue is with the original PS. Does the PC expect the smart pin? What is the difference between the 579799 and the 608428/677762???
***UPDATE*** a new 120W PS just arrived. One WITH the internal smart pin. And the error is gone. So, I HAVE TO assume that the problem all along was that even though this device was shipped with a PS w/o the smart pin, for some reason, this device REQUIRES the PS with s smart pin. Personally, I think that HP should reimburse me for the 2 supplies that i purchased trying to troubleshoot this, but Im sure that wont happen.
This sounds like hardware related issue with the computer as it's not powering on. Hence, I would request you to contact our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:

@ Echo_Lake....Im not sure which MoBo this is, but it cant be the one in the 23-q120 that i am working on. Can it? Also, during my troubleshooting, initially the beep code sounded 4 times and then booted. I upgraded the BIOS in the middle of this debacle and low and behold, after the BIOS update....the device would not boot until after the 5th time the beep code sounded off. So this also tells me that the BIOS is involved. Bottom line, i think the BIOS does expect the smart pin to be present. How else can you explain the fact that any PS without the pin produces the error and any PS with the pin does not? they all were providing the proper voltage.
I am glad to know that you managed to resolve the issue with the new 120W PS. To get the answer to this question, it's the compatibility issue with the PS without a PIN. HP does not recommend to use Third-party hardware or parts as they are not tested by HP and may not be accurate.
It is possible to boot a EFI Arch image. However the XPS' BIOS (tested with BIOS version A04 / XPS 13 9333 circa early 2014) will print "operation system not found" [sic] when using a GPT formatted USB drive. Hence a dd-copied bit-for-bit image of the arch dual ISO will not boot. A workaround is to format the USB drive to VFAT with a bootable MBR as described in USB flash installation medium#BIOS and UEFI. This still allows you to boot in EFI mode (just press F12 during boot - you should find that even after disabling all legacy boot options you can select the arch EFI image) and continue with the install.
You may need to use dosfslabel (from dosfstools) to give the USB drive FAT partition a label that is searched for on boot by the arch ISO (e.g. dosfslabel /dev/sdX1 ARCH_201408) in order for the partition to be mounted properly.
