Dear Teachers of Chinese,

The Nebraska Department of Education and the Department of Teaching,
Learning and Teacher Education in the College of Education and Human
Sciences at UNL has secured a FLAP grant that will provide funding to
support a 10-day Chinese Institute for 25 teachers of Chinese. This
experience will not only enable participants to strengthen their
teaching and pedagogical skills, but it will also offer planned
learning experiences in integrating technology effectively into the
language classroom. The integration of culture, literature and
content into the classroom will be explored and addressed as well as
world language standards and best practices.

The dates of the Chinese Teachers’ Institute are July 10-19, 2011 and
will be held at the Kauffman Residential Center on the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln campus. All expenses related to the Institute are
covered including housing, meals and supplies. Computers will be
provided during the 10 day Institute for use by the participants.
Participants will be housed in residential suites, each participant
will have a private bedroom, but share a bathroom with a participant.
In addition participants will receive a $500 grant to cover their
travel expenses.

We will also introduce the LinguaFolio, a learning tool designed to
enhance student achievement through systematic goal setting. The
LinguaFolio contains student-led activities identifying language
knowledge, study skills, cultural understanding and proficiency level,
and is designed to enhance student self-assessment and analysis of
learning. Teachers will be trained to implement the LinguaFolio, and
they will be provided with portfolio implementation mentors to whom
they can turn with questions or concerns.

Space is limited in the Chinese Institute experience. If you are
interested in this Institute, please respond promptly by following the
procedures outlined on the enclosed application. The application is
due April 10, 2011. A selection committee will review all
submissions, and the 25 accepted applicants will be notified via e-
mail by April 15th. Feel free to contact us if you have any
questions. We look forward to hearing from you regarding your
interest in this endeavor.

Sincerely,

Dr. Aleidine Moeller
