The Center on Religion and the Global East at Purdue University is organizing a writing workshop:

 

Global East Religion Writing Workshop

Date: 8:30-10:30 am HKT, January 6-10, 2025 / 7:30-9:30 pm EST, January 5-9, 2025

Host: Center on Religion and the Global East, Purdue University

Instructor:  Carsten Vala, Loyola University Maryland

This coming January, the Center on Religion and the Global East will offer a writing workshop for junior scholars working on the study of religion in Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean communities. This five-day (2-hour daily) Zoom workshop is designed for advanced graduate students, lecturers, and junior faculty members who are preparing English manuscripts for publication.

Day 1, will be a chance for participants to introduce themselves and gain a general overview of the publication process.

Day 2, will focus on forming research with attention to generating a thesis statement of the article.

Day 3, will offer participants a chance to refine their thesis statements and evaluate the work of fellow participants.

Day 4, will focus on using concepts well, both to refine concepts and to communicate with a larger scholarly audience.

Day 5, will give participants a chance to discuss their research one-on-one with the instructor of the workshop.

• A short cover letter introducing your research and experience learning English. Please include your name (both your English name and your Chinese, Japanese, or Korean name), your current rank (e.g., graduate student, assistant professor), and institutional affiliation.
• A sample of your English writing. It can be an article that has already been published, or something that is still in the writing process.

Carsten Vala is a professor and the department chair of Political Science at Loyola University, Maryland. His publications include The Politics of Protestant Churches and the Party-State in China, God Above Party? (New York: Routledge, 2017).
