Center Director Fenggang Yang gave a series of lectures from late February to mid-March, 2023.
On
February 27, Professor Yang presented “Christianity and Modern China: Challenges
to Culture and Education” in the Vatican, with simultaneous interpretation between English and Italian. The event was hosted by the Dicastery of Education and Culture and the participants are from various ministries.
On
February 28, Professor Yang gave a lecture “Is China the New Roman Empire?
The Rise of Christianity in Modernizing China” at the Pontifical Gregorian University. The Rector made welcome remarks and Professor João J. Vila-Chã chaired it. About 80 people attended the talk. The video recording is available here.
On March 6, the lecture topic at the Catholic University of Sacred
Heart in Milan
was “Is China the New Roman Empire: Church-State Relations and Religious Freedom in Modernizing China.” Professor Andrea Santini of International and EU Law made the introduction, Director of CeSI Marco Caselli, General Ecclesiastical Assistant Claudio Giuliodori,
and Pontifical Foundation Gravissimum Educationis Officer Maximiliano Llanes gave welcome addresses, Professor Elisa Maria Giunipero served as discussant, and Dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences Guido Merzoni made the conclusion.
On March 8, the Juien Ries Archive at the Catholic University in Milan organized a forum about Fenggang Yang’s book Religion in China,
which has been translated into Italian. Professor Yang and several colleagues had a very good discussion. (Attached is the flyer)
On
March 13, at the University of Padova, Professor Yang discussed the topic “The Rise of Christianity in Modern China: Challenges
of Atheism and Confucianism” at Professor Giuseppe Giordan’s class.
On
March 15, Professor Yang introduced our ongoing project “Global
East Religiosity and Changing Religious Landscapes” at Sala Marino Berengo on the Grand Canal at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, which was hosted by Professor Francesca Tarocco and Dr. Jacopo Scarin.
International Forum on Religions
Professor
Yang also participated in the International Forum on Religions at Roma Tre on March 1-4, organized and hosted
by Professor Roberto Cipriani. This was an unusual conference that provided equal amount of time for reviewing and discussing the current state of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Confucianism, Daoism, Shinto, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, New Spirituality, and
Atheism/non-religion. Religions and religious change in Asia received much attention.
