I think the topic comes up every once in a while. But I'm really
thinking I could use getting the IrisPen Executive Asian.

http://www.irislink.com/c2-539/IRISPen-Executive-Asian.aspx

It now seems to advertise Mac compatibility.

Anyone tried it?

I'd probably use its English OCR features 75% of the time, and
Chinese the rest, so it would be good to know how good the English
features work as well. Its a lot of money to spend on a gadget if it
doesn't work, but I spend a lot of time typing text into a computer to
take notes, and anything that could automate that process would be
welcome. However, I'm a fast typer, and I'm not sure this thing will
save me much time - especially if I'm spending lots of time trying to
train it and get it to work...

Thanks!

To me the question is, how good is the software ReadIris Asian?
<http://www.irislink.com/c2-559/Readiris-pro-11-Asian-Edition-OCR-Software.aspx>

The value of the pen itself within the package seems to be about
$100, which is not much money, and there's no reason to think it
wouldn't work, but all it is is a handy input device, and if the
software is not up to the job it makes no difference how the stuff is
scanned. I see there's a trial download available
<http://www.irislink.com/c2-161/download.aspx>.

Sorry!  No Mac trial version.  Has anyone read any really glowing reports of ReadIris software for CJK text or other non-Latin languages?  I'm specially interested in getting OCR software for ancient Greek, but solid information on the WWW seems always to be lacking.

Actually, I've used ReadIris Asian OCR and it seemed to work fairly
well on the few tests I did. However, I haven't tested the Asian OCR
enought on different kinds of materials to really know how well it
holds up. One would want to compare various type faces and types of
material.

Still, I am actually more concerned about the pen itself - since there
is a big difference between a high quality flatbed scan and moving an
object across a page. Fourtunately, I found some reviews on Amazon
which seemed fairly positive, even on a Mac:

It does seem that using the pen is a learned skill, but once you get
it, one reviewer claims it is faster than typing.

If I get one I'll report back!

I discovered that if one goes to the IrisPen online store they offer
two versions of the IrisPen Asian - "express" and "executive" there
doesn't seem to be any need for the executive if you don't intend to
use it for bar-code scanning, and the price difference for this one
feature nearly doubles the cost of the product. Interestingly, the
fact that there is a cheaper version of the Asian pen is hidden
everywhere else on the site, so I thought I'd share this tip with
everyone.

I ordered the cheaper product and hope that it will arrive in a few
weeks. I'll report back once I get it!

Cheers,

Etienne,

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear: There is no web page for this
product. That is what I meant by it being "hidden." It ONLY appears
when you go to the online store and select the item for purchase. Then
you have a choice.

Cheers,

Kerim
