Dear All

I do not know if many of you have bought the Chinese French Ricci dictionary, but on my computer it worked well up to now and suddenly it stopped working with a warning on the "identifiant machine", the number identifying my computer I imagine. It gives as a possibility to explain the problem that I might have added a new hardware in the computer, modifying this numer. But it is a macbook! I have not added anything because it is simply impossible to add anything on such a computer. I do not know what to do.

yours

Etienne

I checked just now and found that I have the same problem. Related to
upgrade to Snow Leopard? Don't know.
Regards
Don

Same here - no clue what could be the cause.

I will write Amnon about it.

Best,

Jens

Hi,

I contacted Amnon, who is no longer working for the project, but still does tech support. I believe he has solved Étienne's problem and he asks others with similar problems to contact him.

I reproduce below the standard message Amnon sends to users confronted with this problem.

Now when I think back, I believe I may have cloned and restored my machine after I used Le Grand Ricci last. This explains my problem.

Using a VPN connection or using one's phone as a modem may also give one's computer a new id. If one has to use such a connection, one should launch Le Grand Ricci prior to opening the connection.

The safest way is to deactivate Ricci when one is done using it, but I know I will have a hard time remembering this ….

Best,

Jens

When you launch the GR, it checks the machine ID and compares it to the one(s) registered to the license. This ID is related to the hardware components of the computer, among which the motherboard, the network card and so on.

This ID must be the same every time the software is launched (unless of course one deactivates it to install on another computer).

Sometimes a change can occur even though the user has neither changed anything in the hardware nor installed a new system. This can happen when a particular change has taken place in *the network connection": if one connects through an external modem, a 3G dongle and so on, the computer can appear as using a different network card and therefore as having had a change in hardware. Another classical problem (which can happen in academic environment) is the connection through a VPN which often attributes to the machine the MAC adress of a virtual network card, wich results in a different machine ID.

If a user has to use one of the above connection methods, or when traveling without assurance regarding the network connection when next using the GR, we can suggest several ways of circumventing the problem, the easiest of which is to deactivate at the end of the work session if the computer is to be turned off, and activating again at the beginning of the next session. This is done by going to the Préférences menu and selecting "désactiver la licence"; it takes only a few seconds, less time to do than to write...
