I have installed the google pinyin function on my laptop, but I am not
able to see the toolbar nor does Google pinyin work at all. However, I
do not get a error message after I installed it.
This is a work computer, I wonder if there is a block for the google
pinyin application?
Has anyone ran into the same problem? thanks!

Are you talking about this http://www.google.com/ime/pinyin/ ?

If so that appears to be windows only. On mac there are quite a few
options.

If you want to just use the built in type-pinyin-get-chinese-characters:
http://robrohan.com/2007/10/18/typing-simplified-chinese-on-mac/

If you want to type pinyin with tone marks:
http://robrohan.com/2007/02/03/typing-proper-pinyin-on-mac/

There are also 3rd party applications like OpenVanilla.org
http://robrohan.com/2007/01/30/openvanillaorg-input-chinese-on-your-mac/

And there is one called IMQ I think that a lot of people like very much.

I hope that helps. If google does have a pinyin input on the mac, I
would be interested to know.

Let's not forget the Chinese Mac site -- the repository for the
accumulated wisdom of this group. While it is not a wiki and I am the
sole editor, it contains more than a decade of contributions by many
of the members here:
