I'm afraid I am a complete novice to Chinese fonts and I'm in dire
need of help.

We are working with a manuscript on ancient Chinese bronzes that was
created on a PC using the PMingLiu font from Word 2003. I have Word 10
for Mac OS X.3 and have attempted in every way conceivable to activate
this font but I do not see it among my list of fonts in the suitcase.
When we attempt to select the font in Illustrator, we can at least see
PMingLiu in the font menu, but as soon as we select it, Illustrator
crashes. I've also attempted to find a Mac OS X version of the font on
the Internet and have come up empty, so I'm assuming that this product
does not exist.

I may be going about this in entirely the wrong way. If so, can you
set me on the right path? I've done some reading on your discussion
group which leads me to believe that it may be a glitch in my version
of OS X that is causing the trouble. Would an upgrade be a worthwhile
pursuit?

Any assistance you can provide is very much appreciated.

You can upgrade to Office 2004, which will install a Mac-friendly
version of PMingLiU.ttf. See here:

Note that Office 2008 is due to be released in January, though I'm not
sure what its system requirements will be. It may not run in 10.3. I
don't know.

I'm not sure about Illustrator. It may depend on the version you have
installed. If you are not wedded to using PMingLiU, then you have
other options. Adobe supplies a "Ming" font with the Creative Suite CS
and above, and of course there's also the Song-style fonts that come
with OS X. General Chinese font info is here:
