II'm trying to create a flashcard set using Word 2004. For the back
side of the flashcards, I want to be able to type so that _only_ the
Zhuyin is displayed with tones (not Zhuyin as a ruby character with
the main word also there). I prefer not to use a Pinyin font, as I'm
studying in Taiwan. (I use Mac OS X 10.4)

Is there any way to type just in Zhuyin, without any characters?

Thanks!

In OS X 10.4, just use the built-in Hanin input method and hit return
instead of the space bar. I think maybe you will have to type by the
tone symbols separately.

Use the Keyboard viewer to see the Zhuyin keyboard layouts offered,
but a lot of people without actual Zhuyin keyboards find it easier to
type using Zhuyin ershi [注音二式] to produce the Zhuyin symbols.

Hmm, okay. I can type using Zhuyin, and I can leave the Zhuyin in
place by hitting return, but this makes the text horizontal. Is there
a way to make it vertical? And how about the tone? Perhaps a special
font could do this?

To get the tone symbols in Hanin, I think you have to type them
separately, after the syllable. I'm not sure how the Zhuyin ershi
keyboard handles them in Tiger. In Leopard's Hanin, the numbers are
used to sort candidates by tone after hitting the spacebar. There
doesn't seem to be any way to type the tone symbols directly (this is
fixed in Snow Leopard's Zhuyin). For that you have to switch to a
Zhuyin keyboard (Standard and Yitian both include tone symbols -- see
the Keyboard Viewer as you set the Hanin Preferences), which is way
too much trouble, IMHO. I guess I would just put them in favorites in
the Character Palette for easy access. Keep in mind that in Unicode,
regular "Spacing Modifier Letters" [ˉˊˇˋ˙] are used for the Zhuyin
tone symbols -- you'll need to apply a Traditional Chinese font to get
them to look the way they are supposed to. Lucida Grande, etc. won't
do.

If you are working in Word, you can do vertical text by turning on the
East Asian (i.e., Japanese) features:

Another option for vertical text is iText:

I think maybe OpenOffice.org can do it in a text box, but I've never
tried it.

If you are a professional, then of course InDesign or Quark's East
Asian editions can do it.

For flashcards nothing matches the awesomeness of ProVoc - it allows
printing, testing and all sorts of nifty features. But you still have
to type in the text you wish to test (or download from users who have
shared their tests).
To type the tones in zhuyin, use the 'hanin' input method and then the
` key (top left under the Esc key) then - for 1st tone (you need to
press the space bar to choose the third option), 3 for 2nd (likewise),
6 for 3rd, 4 for 4th, 7 for 5th.

Good luck!
