I have just bought a MacBook Air. While handwriting input works fine, I can not get the keyboard input to work. Typing in character for pinyin gives me just that - Roman characters.

I have checked the preference pane, everything seems to be in order. What needs to be activated are done. I have to confess that I used the program monolingual to delete languages that I shall never use, such as Slovak, because 64GB SSD disk seems so small nowadays (I can still remember using Mac Performa with only 40MB hard disk).

Any idea welcome.

Monolingual also cleans out input methods and app codes as selected.
That may be the reason. To fix, an OS reinstall is required. Otherwise
MBAs are just great.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I am quite sure I have not set Monolingual to delete Chinese input methods. At least, handwriting input works fine. I suppose I have to consider reinstalling the OS. Bummer.

I see that this question is six months old, so I'm really hoping
you've figured this out by now. Just in case though, and for anyone
coming across this in a search:

Are the Roman characters underlined as you type? If so, and you're a
Windows switcher, like I was, you may not realize you have to press
the space bar for those Roman character to come up at hanzi. This took
me a while to get used to, and I still prefer the Windows IME that
just generates characters from your pinyin input without any
additional keystrokes.

Oh, and be sure to finish typing all the syllables in a compound word
before pressing the space bar. Otherwise, the input editor won't be
able to help you choose the right character based on context.

Correction: I see the message is six weeks old... not months

Thanks for your response.

I found that out recently. This is not the way it works on my iMac either. That is why I was confounded. Definitely a poor way of implementing the input method. I am now sticking to handwriting input.

If I understood it correctly, QIM (3rd party input software) would satisfy
your desires for a more Windows IME like arrangement.
