Hi,

Under 10.5, the ITABC method had a very useful feature where you could
type pinyin vowels with tone marks by typing the sequence "v8" and
then selecting the correct vowel with the necessary tone mark from the
candidate window. This feature seems to be gone in the pinyin IME in
10.6, is that correct?

Is there something equivalent in 10.6's pinyin IME that will allow me
to enter pinyin vowels with tone marks?

Alternatively, does QIM have an equivalent function?

Thank you very much in advance.

IMKQIM has similar features.

When you input pinyin, you can use option+number key to set the
pinyin's tone, for example:

you input bei'jing (北京) , use option+1 to change the first pinyin
(bei) tone, and use option+2 to change the secondary pinyin's (jing)
tone.
You can also use tab key to change the first pinyin's tone as a
shortcut.

Thank you. I think I may have been unclear. What I wanted was to
type the actual pinyin letters with tone marks, not the characters
that correspond to them. I.e., I wanted to write "běijīng" not 北京.
There used to be a way, with the "v8" sequence, to do it within
ITABC. But now there doesn't seem to be a way other than switching to
the US Extended Keyboard, is that right?

I think IMKQIM still match your request. If you want to get běijīng,
just type beijing, and then use option+1 and option+2 to change the
tones, then press enter key to get the pinyin with tone marks (I use
this feature get the 'běijīng' string).

I think this feature is more easier than ITABC's.

Thank you again. So I figured it's better to ask a stupid question
than to not ask a question at all. But I can't seem to make the
opt-1, opt-2 trick work in IMKQIM. Pressing opt-1 or opt-2 doesn't
seem to do anything. I can switch through tones in the first syllable
by using the tab key, but I can't get the option key combinations to
do anything. Is there a special setting I have to enable in
preferences? (I already have the checkbox for "Use tones to filter
candidates (use tab key to switch between tones)" checkbox checked.

Sorry if this is dumb, but I just can't get the option-key
combinations to work.

Ken,

Could you confirm what version of IMKQIM you're using?

Please make sure you have turn 'Use option+number key to change the
tone' feature in IMKQIM preferences program ( 'Candidate Palette'
tab )

Thank you! Joe and you were right: I had installed the version of
IMKQIM for Leopard instead of the latest version for Snow Leopard,
which is why I didn't see this option. 惭愧, 惭愧. Thank you very much.
