We had been using a founder font pack with an older eMac and office x
software. We got a grant to upgrade to a new iMac and new office
program and now can not get the fonts to work. In word the pinyin will
not show up over the simplified chinese characters. We type in the
pinyin using the input simplified chinese, then we spacebar to select
the correct characters, then we highlight the characters and change
the font to one of the founder fonts so the pinyin will show above the
characters. This will not work now. Is there another way of making the
pinyin appear above the font?

If I understand what you've been doing correctly, there is no reason
why it should not still work in Mac OS X 10.5 or 6 and Office 2008.
The Pinyin is part of the font -- there is no way to make it not
appear. So you must be selecting the wrong Founder font. See here for
a general discussion of how these fonts work:

http://www.yale.edu/chinesemac/pages/romanization.html#hanzi (see
"Hanzi + Pinyin")

Which Founder font pack have you been using? Which font(s),
specifically?

Please do not attach files to mailing lists, especially not in TIFF format nor ones that's close to half a Mb in size, twice!

Photobucket.com and other photo hosts are the go and just post a link.

Hi,
The system is snow leapord with ms office 2004.
The founder font is called FZKTPY10. I've attached it.
Also, I'll attach some tiff to show you what I mean.
Thanks,
Amy

Hi Amy,

First, I have good news -- you are using Office 2008, not 2004!

Your screen shot shows the problems:

1. The font shown in the Word document is 宋体 which is not the Founder
font you refer to. See on the upper right in the Formatting toolbar
where it says "宋体"...

2. The Chinese text in the document is not selected (highlighted). So
when you open that Font window you show on the left, change the font
to FZKTPY01, and hit "OK" -- nothing happens because the Chinese text
is not selected. So just select the text first.

In short -- don't give up! You are having trouble adjusting to the
change from Word X to Word 2008. FZKTPY01 (and 02, 03, 04, 05, 06)
will work just fine on the new iMac.

Eric

PS: Weiyun is correct that you should not send a 2.1 MB font file to
an e-mail discussion group. It could overload someone's in-box. In
addition, I will have to delete your post online because it is a
copyrighted font that we do not have permission to distribute.

As for the tiff image, the problem there is that you used a format
(tiff) that has large file sizes. You need to convert it to a a more
efficient format, like jpg. You can do this in Preview using the File
> Save As... dialog. As long as the file is under 100K it is okay to
post -- the smaller, the better, obviously. Since I am going to delete
your earlier post, I have attached your screen shot here, which I have
converted to a medium-quality jpg -- only 66K!

Thanks. I got it working last night. The problem was the font needed
to be placed in the system fonts folder. Yes, the shot was in ms
office 08 but I really needed it to work in both 04 and 08 so I was
troubleshooting both programs. In regards to the attachments, I mostly
read through groups but rarely participate. So, when I send out the
attachment I didn't realize I was replying to the whole group. Sorry
now I know. Thanks for your time Eric.
