I just brought a new Imac with OS X 10.5.4

The simplified Chinese input has a big problem. I use Pinyin. Whenever
I typed in 'manman'(慢慢),the Chinese input freezes and although the
symbol of Chinese is still in the toolbar the input does not work.

I tried to switch it back on from the system preference and it also
doesn't work. the only way is to restart the Imac. This is very
annoying as manman is a common word and used often in Chinese. Anyone
know what to do? Is manman some kind of magic spell implanted by
Apple?

C,

When you say you use simplified-Chinese Pinyin, I assume you mean
ITABC, correct? What program are you using? Microsoft Word 2008? Or
something else? Does the problem also occur in TextEdit (the text
editor that comes with Mac OS X)?

I don't have problems typing manman in ITABC -- if there were a bug
involving a basic word like 慢慢 during input, it would have been
identified and fixed in Leopard long ago.

If the problem also occurs in TextEdit, then see if it also happens in
a new user account. Just go to System Preferences > Accounts and
create a new account. Then log into that account, activate ITABC, and
do a test in TextEdit. Tell us the results.

Another thing you should consider is switching to QIM. If you have
problems the developer, Glider, will try to help. Definitely worth the
$20, and starting five days from now it will be on sale for a limited
time for only $12. So your timing is good:

Does anyone know how to make the Private Use Area "cdphanzi" TrueType
fonts, made at Academia Sinica, accessible in Mac OS?

They can be downloaded from <http://www.openfoundry.org/index.php?option=com_mtree&Itemid=257&lang=tw&link_id=28&task=viewlink
>.

They contain, e.g., 62,366 characters from 漢語大字典 not in
Unicode.

It used to be possible to download the application to access the fonts
(on Windows) from <http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~cdp/cdphanzi/>, but this
site has been dead for the last week or so.

Cheers,

Jens

<http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~cdp/cdphanzi/> is now open again.

What I wrote about 漢語大字典 was wrong (62,366 is the total number of
characters).

The cdphanzi fonts contain the following:

For what it's worth, I was able to open these fonts and see their
contents using TypeTool. I haven't yet investigated further, but since
they are open-source, it does seem like it might be possible to
legally fix the errors that make them invisible to Mac OS X.
