Excellent job! Was it a lot of work? It would be interesting if one
easily could get http://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/enamdict.gz as
well.

Cheers

Very impressive, Yuri,

ENAMDICT is an enormously useful resource. I've used WordLookup to
access EDICT and ENAMDICT (and CEDICT, though I find that less useful
than Wenlin). Seeing as these sources are all updated often, it would
be really helpful and a great service if you could write up directions
for 'building' these dictionaries so we can update them in the future
if needed.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, i will think about it. I can post 2 tools (and its sources) to
generate Apple Dictionary source XML files for CEDICT and ENAMDICT.

Perfect! Спасибо a million!

240M! It's about the same size as an episode of Dr. Who I just
recorded from television. But enamdict is more entertaining!

I know very little about this, but if it's some kind of XML file
that's needed, I wonder if it might be possible to adapt the
"Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms" of Soothill and Hodous for use
with the Apple Dictionary? An "XML Source" file is downloadable:
<http://www.hm.tyg.jp/~acmuller/soothill/soothill-hodous.html>

Thanks so much! I haven't been reading this list in a long time, and
hadn't previously been able to figure out how to use CEDICT properly.
Quite cool, and a motivator for me to boot into Leopard rather than
Tiger.
Any chance a dictionary of classical Chinese can be made available in
this Apple Dictionary friendly format?

Yuri - Let me second Patrick's thanks for your work on the CEDICT for
Apple Dictionary. v1.2 works very nicely.

Patrick - I imagine it's possible but would require a freely available
text-file-based classical Chinese dictionary, which I'm not aware of.
Do you know of any?

Phil, if you know a good quality English to Chinese database with
source (plain text, XML, etc.) - dictionary source like CEDICT, i can
compile it for Apple Dictionary.

I guess I'm just thinking of the way WordLookup reads the CEDICT
files. It is able to go both ways. Can that also be done with
Dictionary, using the same CEDICT database?

Hello,

I am not sure I understand the discussion about XML and formats. I
have developed two websites for Chinese and Japanese from the same
sources (I have just sent a separate post on this group about www.smarthanzi.net
and www.smartkanji.net on Mac). My understanding is that Yuri's
development is a standalone application for Mac, which is another
option. I am working on PC and have no Mac, so I cannot try it.

Compared to a website, a standalone application can be used offline
and has better response times. The main drawback is that the user has
to download updates on a regular basis to keep up-to-date.

XML is a very convenient format for developers at the cost of bigger
file size. In the case of applications based on EDICT or CEDICT type
files, I see no benefit in using XML: the text files are easy to use
(for the developer) and quicker to download (for the user). XML should
be preferred only when there is a good reason to do so:

1) JMDict (Japanese Multilingual Dictionary, available in XML)
supports different languages and provides more complete information
than EDICT.

2) Soothill and Hodous' Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist (also available
in XML) also provides detailed infos which could hardly be contained
in the EDICT or CEDICT format. Moreover, since it holds long
explanations for each Chinese word, the XML overhead is small in
percentage.

3) I believe that XML might be helpful for HanDeDict since there are
some valuable addtitional fields for each word: (u.E.), (S), (Chem),
(Int), (Dialect), (Geo), etc. Unless I missed something, there is no
formal documentation about these fields, and one has to parse the
translation if one wishes to capitalize on them. My view is that a XML
version of HanDeDict with a formal access to these fields would be
welcome.

Best wishes,
Jean

Thanks so much Yuri! Just wondering if these dictionaries all somehow
supplement one another, or if using a select combination (Langdao and
Babylon, for example) would generally suffice? Can we get more

Steven, you are welcome.

Langdao and Lazy Word are from StarDict (most popular open source
dictionary for *nix) sources - http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries.php
.

Babylon is small dictionary - http://www.babylon.com/dictionary/1262/Babylon-Chinese(S)-English.html
.

They are not supplement each other. You may use only one dictionary if
you need, just select your favourite.

If you know or think that dictionaries was pirated, just do not use
them and warn a possessor of the right(s) about illegal materials.

Thanks again, Yuri.

I really have started to enjoy using Dictionary in Leopard, especially
the convenience of the popup window. One major issue with it, however,
is that the popup window size remains far too small. Changing the
popup display font is not too difficult (Applications/Dictionary.app/
Contents/ShareSupport/DictionaryPanel.app/Contents/Resources/
PopupStyle.css) but I would like to modify the window size as well
since it invariably involves scrolling to even see the definitions in
Chinese. Any ideas how to do this? (I already checked OSX hints but
found nothing).

I also have been using LiveDictionary, which does not have this issue
with popup window size. I especially like using this application since
it can be modified to load into a variety of applications simply by
adding their bundle identifiers to the plunin manager bundle. Hitting
a hot key then provides popup definitions from the CEDICT database.
The drawbacks to using LD are having to add bundle identifiers to hack
other applications and the fact that in certain applications
(NetNewsWire, for example), it does not parse things as well as
Apple's Dictionary. So I would like to use Dictionary more if the
popup window size problem can be resolved.

Steven

wow at first I didn't know there was a popup window feature like

You're very welcome, Jacky. The keyboard shortcut for Dictionary can
also be customized. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse >

Steven, there is no problem :).

http://rapidshare.com/files/74178112/DictionaryPanel.zip.html

There is very usefull modified application DictionaryPanel.app in
archive that has increased size of the PopUp translate window. It is
located at the "/Applications/Dictionary.app/Contents/SharedSupport"
folder. You can access this folder through right clicking the
Dictionary.app and choosing the "Show the package content". Replace
the original DicrttionaryPanel.app with new one and do not forget
Logout ang Login your computer. Before doing so please archive the
original Dictionary.app (or DictionatyPanel.app) for safety if you
would like to restore initial conditions.

New app has effect only on English or Russian localizations.

Brilliant Yuri! Although the Dictionary.app popup is slightly slower
than LiveDictionary, the parsing is superior. It also seems that
LiveDictionary will not continue further development, so it's
reassuring to know there's a viable alternative out there already.
Now, if one could just add a Services feature to copy selected search
terms to a lexicon......

Thanks again for your help.

PS FYI, it took me two attempts to download this file.

Yuri,
This is very cool. Thank you so much!!

I am also working on the Chinese-English Dictionary for Apple
Dictionary, however; since you have completed most of the work in that
area I will probably introduce a Web Service that will allow you to
link to my Chinese Translation Tool in the same way we can link to
Wikipedia. What do you think?

I will post the links that are directly related to this discussion and

Is there anyway to make all those Apple Dictionaries (including the

If you're running Leopard you could try Dashcode to create widgets.
For more information, go here:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#ical

In Safari 3, you can also make a clipping of an online dictionary
search field and create a widget. This is obviously much easier, but
I've had some mixed results with MGBG as a widget dictionary in
Dashboard.

I have another issue.

I followed the post to change the font-size of the Pop-up panel for
Dictionary and it works. However, the English font size now is too
large for my taste. Is there a way just to increase the font size of
Chinese text (or the Chinese dictionary) but not the English text (or
English dictionary)? The default font size is 8 which is perfect for
English but too small for Chinese. Font size 12 is great for Chinese
but too big for English.

Thanks!
