You could read Chinese by using most windows' Chinese
applications under WIN-OS/2 environment.

If I want to read Chinese in native OS/2 environment and applications (e.g.
Newsreader/2, WebExplorer), what could I do?

Thanks in advance

Well, if you want use native OS/2 environment to read Chinese,
you have to use native Chinese OS/2 operating system. Right now
NR/2 or WebExplorer support DBCS, but they rely on base system
to display Chinese fonts etc...

However, that only works if you are using a DOS app. What if I want
to read a Chinese text in an OS/2 app?

It is no way to read chinese text with any OS/2 viewer or editor in
english warp. Or you must use T-warp.

You can edit and view chinese in english warp using MuleOS2:

tequila.cc.tohoku.ac.jp:
/pub/os2/editors/mule-2.3.os2.tar.gz
compiled package
/pub/os2/editors/muleos2.tar.gz

Really! Is this MuleOS2 a editor containing chinese font so that
it can view chinese DB character without any chinese system?

I believe its a port of the mule to OS/2. Mule is MUlti-Lingual Emacs,
which is an Emacs editor capable of inputing and displaying multiple
language at the same time (of course, using an encoding which support it,
UniCode). It's also possible to use other encoding (of course, then it's
not really "multilingual" but just "bilingual".)

It comes with a font utility to convert `bdf' fonts to `mfn' font which
can be used in muleos2.

You can get the Chinese `bdf' fonts from `ftp.ifcss.org'.

If you never use emacs in OS/2 or UNIX before, be prepare to spend
some time to set it up and learn to use it.

There is a software called Unionway that can display Chinese under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, I
am not sure whether it works for OS/2 but you can try it. You can find the software from
http://www.unionway.com.

I think both Unionway and TwinBridge are for Win-OS2 but not OS/2 app. If
you have Unionway or TwinBridge installed in Win-OS2, then you can view
chinese with Netscape 2.0. But, I am using IBM WebExplorer - an OS/2 app,
no luck so far ...

Also, there is OS2:VIEWER available from http://www.cnd.org/software for
OS/2. But, I think it supports GB code only but not BIG5.

If you are using English-version of OS/2 Warp and want to install the best and most flexible
Chinese environment, I recommend that you investigate a software package, called WarpMate
in China and ChinesePro in the USA. It was written by a friend of mine, named Wang Zhi-Dong,
whose company StoneRich Sight, markets in the US through DORAK. I have the contact info
somewhere, but you can probably find DORAK through Yahoo or some other search engine.

Does ChinesePro support OS2 app or just Win-OS2? I searched Yahoo and
viewed the ChinesePro home page, it does not give too much info.
I am using English version of Warp Connect. Thank you.

It supports both. If you have English Warp installed with Win-OS2, then when you
load ChinesePro, OS/2 and Win-OS2 both will now support Chinese language
processing. I have not tried it with Warp Connect, but I can imagine no reason
why the additional network support in Connect would cause any problems. It
would be a good question to ask before purchasing, though.

I am using WebExplorer myself also. I don't think there is a view for native OS/2.
however, I "think" china is making a chinese viewer for OS/2, just like twinbridge,
more of an chinese environment add on for OS/2. I think it's coming out in March,
but only display simplified font. I heard this from some bbs. not sure how much
one can trust this information.

This work is completed. The product out of mainland China is called WarpMate in China
and ChinesePro in the USA. It is produced by Wang ZhiDong's company, Stone Rich Sight.
I have the OS/2 version and have seen the Win95 version. It works very well and the
integration of Chinese is thorough and very smooth. It displays either simplified or
complex characters at the touch of a toggle key. It will work with WebExplorer v.1.0,
but I don't believe that v.1.03 is NLS enabled, so it is doubtful. The US distributor is
DORAK.
