Hello acupeeps,

I just started seeing an infant with auditory neuropathy, a condition where the individual can't hear b/c the auditory nerves are not firing appropriately to the brain.

She is 4 months old but corrected she is a 2 month old (she was a premie).  No history of this in the family.  She was diagnosed at birth.

The good news about her is that all the hardware, so to speak, the bones, hair cell function, and nerves are there.  She can also hear loud noises as she will turn her head or startle at the sound. She is also a good sleeper and eats and poops well.  After I worked on her, her skin coloring drastically improved.  She had this bluish-greyish-purplish tinge to her hands and face, but within minutes of the treatment, her hands had a normal coloring and her face color improved.  She does have excess little hairs on her head/near the neck - the kind that's indicative of deficiency.

Do any of you have experience with this condition?  What kind of results did you have?  Did you prescribe herbs?  I'm thinking of focusing on strengthening her Kidney system in general, but if you have any clinical pearls to share, please do.

Thank you in advance.

Luriko

Luriko,

This sounds like this child will really benefit from you treatment. In any premie, I would recommend Grow & Thrive regardless of what else you might consider. G&T promotes healthy neural pruning and integration (probably that’s why it’s been effective for kids with seizure disorders, among other things). At this point, I wouldn’t recommend any other herbal treatment. It’s possible that her brain and nervous system just need extra time to develop and unfold.

I would definitely suggest needling point around the ears , including TB 17, GB2, SI 19, TB 21 plus GB 20 - insert and remove. Also, needle Ki 3 and GV 16, which promotes brain development. Ki 3 and GV 16 can remain in place while you needle the other points, and then remove them.

If you can see the child twice/week, that would be ideal.

Thank you Efrem. Yes, for sure I was planning on needling around the ear, but thank you for the suggestion of keeping K3 and Du 16 in during the treatment.  I also didn't know GnT had that effect. Very helpful.  Can you elaborate on what other conditions GnT would be good for specifically?  I'm only familiar of it as a tonic to support GI and Kidneys.  And like an "herbal multivitamin."

Thanks.

Sent from my phone, excuse the brevity and any typos.

G&T is definitely the “herbal multi-vitamin” for children, regardless of age or condition of health. Thank of C&T for any condition that represents a challenge to normal development. Of course, if you think about it, anything that supports Spleen and Kidney - pre-natal and post-natal qi - promotes healthy growth and development.

Luriko, premies are at risk for hearing loss from sound pollution in the NICU, all those beeps and alarms in isolettes.
also from gentamycin antibiotic commonly used in premies which is oto-toxic...
what meds was mom on during pregnancy? how many ultrasounds did she have, was this an IVF baby?  any hypoxia at birth can result in hearing loss....
I agree Grow and thrive would be great here....spleen-kidney support the sources of qi....
also source point massage....
look for any dark skin birth marks on her body...particularly axillary freckles....
this could indicate a condition known as neurofibromatosis ...acoustic neuromas can contribute to hearing loss..has she had an MRI?
other causes could include more latent congenital infections (CMV, toxoplasmosis, herpes,)

Thank you Stephen,

I won't be back in the office until Monday, but from my recollection, she
- did get an antibiotic in the NICU
- She was not an IVF baby; natural conception
- mother had preeclampsia, with high blood pressure during the 32week visit.  U/S showed distress so they had to do an emergency C section.  29yo at birth.  (first pregnancy was full term and no issues with first child.)
- 2 U/S post birth ruled everything out

Will check on the meds mother was on, any MRIs, and U/S during en utero, and axillary freckles.

She will be getting a booth test at 6mo.

Had higher creatinine levels at NICU - 1.6 instead of 1.0
low birth weight - 2 lbs.

I will report back with answers to your other questions.
