Hi Anya,
I think that many have struggled with the facile translations of the Chinese ideograms which represent, symbolically, metaphorically, spiritually and bodily the sounds, i.e. the expressions, of the being as manifested through the Five Phases as they are embodied, especially in the mammalian species.
I believe that it helps to begin with your embodied experience. For example, what does it feel like when you are suddenly aroused to your full attention, like a big cat stalking its prey? What noice would sound would you make as you began to moved out of the posture of alert readiness into motion and action and speed? Isn’t this the sound of Wood? How about this: what sound would you make at the moment you experience the peak of pleasure, like an orgasm, not only from sex but from an absolutely delicious meal or the deep satisfaction when you suddenly think of the most elegant solution to the problem in your mind? Would you laugh, giggle, scream, chuckle, swoon? Isn’t this the sound of Fire? Now think about what it feel like to breathe. Sometimes it’s rhythmic and synchronous, sometimes it’s arrhythmic, interrupted, the breath held back or forced out. When you inhale and try making a sound while inhaling, what would that be? Think of the wind blowing through a reed or a flute. Or playing the harmonica: the sound of the notes is different breathing in than breathing out. Now what sound do you make as you exhale (make it!)? What sound would you make after finishing the story your were writing or reading, or the song you finished singing, or the chant you finished chanting? Would it be a sigh as your watched the thoughts receding into your history? Would you miss them? Would you wonder if they would ever return? When you hold your breath in our out, while waiting for something too happen or to change or to be completed, what sound do you make when you finally breathe again? Isn’t this the sound of Metal?
Think about it. You’ll feel like you’re making it up, inventing it - that’s the right feeling. Now, translate that embodied idea into behavioral, characterological or personality terms? What does that person look like and how does he/she relate to self/other/world? Imagine being your best Metal self. What is important to you? What do you believe in? How do you solve problems? Whom do you like what kind of work do you want to do? What kind of relationships do you seek? How do you make sense out of your world?
Think about it. But don’t just think about it, be it….
