Dear all,
I have reread Efrem's  ( between heaven and earth)and Stephen's ( fire/ water child)  books again trying to fall in love with the metal element .
Somehow the notion that the sound of Metal is weeping seems very negative to me and I get negative images and associations
Would you kindly share something about Metal that would be purely positive that would enhance my view of this element.
I was actually thinking:  if breath is Metal, could then the sound associate with breath be the metal sound?
In pranayama practice breath becomes a rhythm , Rhythm belong to Metal as a pattern , so could then the sound of Rhythmical breathing be the sound of Metal?
I am also looking for a positive and compelling Metal Element People's stories Do you have one?
thank you in advance,
anya

PS I have asked before , will ask again- Efrem and Stephen- we need a refresh course please!!! when?

Blessings,

Dear Anya, for me for quite sometime working with little "metal" children, or "metal" teachers or parents, I have been using the more precise translation of the Chinese term for "Jin" which is Gold (or really any precious metal) to define the highest ideals of refined Grace - I find this resonates deeply with those who are organized around the beautiful dying season of autumn.
check out the little animation I made for my non-profit Tournesolkids...perhaps it will help you fall in love with the sacred beauty of rhythm and refinement of Gold.
also here is a poem to go along with that.
love,
stephen

Hi Anya,

I think that many have struggled with the facile translations of the Chinese ideograms which represent, symbolically, metaphorically, spiritually and bodily the sounds, i.e. the expressions, of the being as manifested through the Five Phases as they are embodied, especially in the mammalian species.

I believe that it helps to begin with your embodied experience. For example, what does it feel like when you are suddenly aroused to your full attention, like a big cat stalking its prey? What noice would sound would you make as you began to moved out of the posture of alert readiness into motion and action and speed? Isn’t this the sound of Wood? How about this: what sound would you make at the moment you experience the peak of  pleasure, like an orgasm, not only from sex but from an absolutely delicious meal or the deep satisfaction when you suddenly think of the most elegant solution to the problem in your mind? Would you laugh, giggle, scream, chuckle, swoon? Isn’t this the sound of Fire? Now think about what it feel like to breathe. Sometimes it’s rhythmic and synchronous, sometimes it’s arrhythmic, interrupted, the breath held back or forced out. When you inhale and try making a sound while inhaling, what would that be? Think of the wind blowing   through a reed or a flute. Or playing the harmonica: the sound of the notes is different breathing in than breathing out. Now what sound do you make as you exhale (make it!)? What sound would you make after finishing the story your were writing or reading, or the song you finished singing, or the chant you finished chanting?   Would it be a sigh as your watched the thoughts receding into your history? Would you miss them? Would you wonder if they would ever return? When you hold your breath in our out, while waiting for something too happen  or to change or to be completed, what sound do you make when you finally breathe again? Isn’t this the sound of Metal?

Think about it. You’ll feel like you’re making it up, inventing it - that’s the right feeling. Now, translate that embodied idea into behavioral, characterological or personality terms? What does that person look like and how does he/she relate to self/other/world? Imagine being your best Metal self. What is  important to you? What do you believe in? How do you solve problems? Whom do you like what  kind of work do you want to do? What kind of relationships do you seek? How do you make sense out of your world?

Think about it. But don’t just think about it, be it….

Another thought. Metal as Gold or Iron or even Mercury is worth some consideration. Think about the age if metallurgy in Chinese civilization and the discovery or the rarity, beauty and utility of various metals and their various alloys. Along with metallurgy and primitive chemistry emerged a more sophisticated alchemy. Alchemy is all about the translation of what is unrefined - ore - into something precious, magical, sacred in its power to transform the gross untie the sublime. It’s no accident that the Lung is associated with the Metal Phase, because it is the Lung that transforms the pure essence of food, fluids and air into the most precious substance of life: Qi and Blood. Not only that, but in concert with the Kidney, guards, protects and organizes that most sacred part of our being, from the outer surface of us to the deepest layers of our interior….  In Between Heaven and Earth, we chose crystal as the image to symbolize Metal. A crystal is the creation over eons of something precious (it could be a ruby or a diamond or a geode) and intrinsically beautiful and a kind of perfection of form and substance. To behold may produce a profound sense of awe: how about the sound, “Wowwwwwww…”.

I’m glad to read emails from our class members, reaching out with questions about pediatric patients.  I absolutely love the insight you share with us Efrem and Stephen.  I use the book Fire Child Water Child several times a month with parents and children especially when teachers don’t know what to do with behaviors so they send them to me for meds. The parents and the teachers learn so much.  I especially enjoy the enlightenment the  metal kids get from your book because once caregivers and the kids understand their “ power” then life is so much better for them.  The website is so helpful.  Thank you. I’m so grateful to have been part of your class.
Thank you for sharing with all of us on the email list Anya. I learn from your questions.
