Greetings Shabnam...I'd like to hear more information about the pregnancy, illness, medications, labor, medication during delivery and the mother's current emotional and physical state since this often transfers in handling the baby.   Is she breast feeding, is the baby eating well, is the baby being swaddled, sleeping pattern, bowel movements, vaccinations, and who are her support system of caregivers.

also may be worth having the baby seen by a good craniosacral osteopath to check for neck and brainstem damage.  this often sets up a chronic fright.

as for acupuncture, I would suggest doing some gentle tuina or shonishin stroking and tapping along du/ren, kidney/bladder spleen/stomach channels....it's easy and quick and brings quick relief....mom can be taught to massage these channels as too....

best,
steve

Hi all!

I have a patient who gave birth 5 weeks ago, a rather traumatic experience for both mother and child.  The baby had traveled down and during the c-section had to be suctioned out.

He still cries uncontrollable to the point where he's gasping for air, I have not needled him yet, only attempted to use acupressure to no avail.   Any recommendations?

Thank you,

Dear Shabnam, I too had a baby 5 weeks ago ( my third baby boy)
I too highly recommend Osteopathy asap,
I also use anthroposophical remedies, and rose cream is the best noninvasive remedy to comfort a newborn
Also, the wellness and the physical-mental state of  the mother is very important, as she may not be all that peaceful after a traumatic experience, so i would suggest BEER, yes, hops beer for the mother, as a medicine, 1/2 a beer twice a day..baby will definitely sleep better, mother can rest better..
rest is very healing for both at 5 weeks mark..
with care,
anya

Blessings,

Shabnam,

I concur with Steve and Anya. Additionally, I would suggest that you consider the following.

light needling (just tap in with 16 gauge needle or smaller without retention-: tap and remove) the following points and in the following order:
Du 20, LI 11 , LI 4, St 36, Li3, Sp 6, Ki 4. Except for Du 20 (obviously!), alternate left and right side needling so as to use fewer needles. If you treat the baby more than once, needle right and left again, but in the opposite sequence.

Herbs and supplements:

For general restlessness, irritability and inconsolability: Quiet Calm: 1-2 squirt directly into the back of the child’s throat three times/day or as needed (before daytime nap or nighttime sleep).

If there is constipation and/or colic: Tummy Tamer and/or Easy Going (same dosage and frequency - as needed - as Quiet Calm. Mom should also be taking Quiet Calm!)

Also for constipation and irritability: 1/8 - 1/4tsp  powdered Magnesium Citrate 1-2 times/day (can be mixed with a little warm water or breast milk if mom is nursing or pumping).

Keep us posted!

Thanks for your guidance Efrem!  I treated the now 6 week, 2 day old infant this morning.  I used all the points your RXd, starting on the left side and finishing with the right side (all points bilateral other than DU20)

Best wishes to all,
