Hello All,
Two dads just adopted a 2 1/2 week old infant this week and they live in LA (Silver Lake area) and wondered if anyone from this group was practising there. They are very impressed with the 5 finger handbook of feeding and some of the others gems of advice that I shared with them from our class.
They are in a very good situation and spent three days with the birth parents who already have 3 children. The mom is 27 (so is father) and chose Charlie and Jason (new parents) back in June and has been mediating on them since May but they(adoptive parents) just found out this week as it took the birth mom awhile to convince the birth father that having two dads might be the best option for this child. So everything is new and fresh but the good news is the River Jack is doing very well with his new dads. He was having some sinus troubles with feeding but once he slowed down and started sucking on a finger first then eating seemed to have helped this. River Jack was on formula for just one night after leaving birth mom's milk supply and before the first shipment of breast arrived but he switched to it beautifully. He has received no vaccinations yet.
He was born on 10/8/16; two weeks early as due date was 10/24/16- mom was tested for all sorts of drugs because of this and tested positive for pot and opioids. The opioids were there because the hospital gave her opioid drugs when she first got there and the test was done after that so of course she tested positive. She had eaten a pot brownie to help with the contraction pains bc she did not think she was ready to deliver yet.
He weighed 6lbs 5 oz at birth. He has lost some weight and that made both new dads nervous but I was able to explain that breastfed babies often do lose weight after birth. How long before Grow and Thrive can be given to newborns? When would they expect him to be gaining weight?
Any advice is welcome and appreciated!
Also if anyone is moderating this group I would like to change my email address as I don't use my old yahoo email account anymore. Also will there be anymore classes in the Bay Area.
best, Louisa
