General:
The award-winning Charlotte Department of Transportation is hiring for the position of GIS Analyst within the Planning & Design division. Charlotte is the 17th largest city in the U.S. in total population and is expected to grow by more than 400,000 people by 2040. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative candidate who can help advance Charlotte as a Smart City. This position will play a major role in shaping Charlotte’s future transportation system through timely data analysis and collaboration with many teams throughout the organization.
The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) is the fourth largest department within the City of Charlotte organization. CDOT has more than 400 employees working across six divisions. The department operates and develops a multi-modal transportation system that serves an area of 303 square miles and consists of 2,450 centerline miles of streets, over 740 signalized intersections, 175,000 traffic control signs and approximately 2,015 linear miles of sidewalk.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
This position utilizes GIS technology and analysis to provide the necessary support to help Charlotte become the premier city in the nation for integrating land use and transportation choices. This position serves as the secondary point of contact on GIS development and coordination for the department. Supports GIS data activities; including data creation, data collection procedures, data maintenance, compilation and analysis of Enterprise data resources. Aids in development of customized GIS applications. Provides additional technical support for GIS application and software questions. Utilizes GIS software and cartographic knowledge to create maps and infographics, which accurately and clearly convey the information in a manner suitable for publishing/public presentation. Other duties include training colleagues; helping with presentations; managing media; participating in training classes and seminars; creating custom maps; and aiding departments when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
A two-year degree with 3 years experience.
Preferred four-year degree with a BA/BS in geography, urban planning or related field. Significant experience in applied GIS required; data analysis, creation, interpretation and cartography.
Knowledge,Skills, Abilities
Advanced knowledge/proficiency using ArcGIS 10.x and other ESRI products, such as, ArcGIS Online; proficient in geodatabase design and implementation. Knowledge in utilizing business intelligence tools, such as Tableau, is a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Good communications skills and the ability to provide instruction on internal GIS applications and processes are required. Ability to prepare well-written, clear and precise memoranda, reports and technical documentation.
Salary Range:
$61,766 to $67,950

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
