Backpack Update from Dorothy| I wanted to take this time to share with
you how your help has impacted one of the refugee clients I see. I have
been seeing a single, African, mom of eight children since last April.
Her main issues were learning to adjust to life in the US and processing the
traumatic events she experienced in her home country. In December of
last year, I lost touch with her because she was evicted from her apartment
(couldn’t pay the rent) and was living in a homeless shelter somewhere in
Denver. Last week, she stopped by my office unannounced. I was
pleasantly surprised to see her. As she spoke through her tears, my
heart sank; her life has been one struggle after another and it doesn’t end
here. However, through her story, I was reminded of what I love about
her; she has such strength and courage. She perseveres despite all the
obstacles she faces and she holds on to her faith dearly. She worries
about many things, especially for the future of her children, but she also has
hope. One of the things she shared with me was that four of her
children were going to school without school supplies, so at the end of our
session, I gave her four backpacks and some toiletry items. I wish I could
have captured her expression – she couldn’t stop smiling and saying,
“asante,” which means thank you. Her gratefulness impacted us the rest
of the day. I wanted to share my client’s story because I wanted you to
know that your generosity is making a difference! Asante.
