Everyone has a desire to show himself/herself, hoping to be noticed and praised, or showing his/her uniqueness.
By acting the roles in the stories, the engaged students can get a chance and a platform to tell their inner feelings. We also expect the children to realize the importance of showing themselves and that standing on the stage is not so terrible as they thought. As a result, they will have the courage to catch any opportunities in their future.
It was a lesson “Without Chairs”. Instead of passive sitting, they all stood up to be the host and show their uniqueness. Though the children were shy, they tried their best to present the whole story by “taking action and experiencing”.
As it was not my task to guide them, I missed many interesting parts, but luckily, not all of them. What stroked me most was The Mountain King of “Savage and Priest”. Because of his shyness, Shu Jun, who actually looked like The Mountain King, spoke in a really low voice. So I went to him and tapped him on the shoulder, and said, “How can you speak in such a low voice? You are not like The Mountain King at all! ” This really scared him. We all laughed and let encourage hem. He replied:”OK!” but when he opened his mouth, again, low voice, just like a pricked ball. We couldn’t help laughing again. His problem is lack of experience, I suppose.
Another funny game was “Students Who Skip Classes”. In that mountain village, at this embarrassed age, most boys and girls dare not talk to each other, not to mention body touch.
To our surprises, the show “Students Who Skip Classes” was actually performed!
A little girl acting the role of the mother tweaked a boy’s ear and scolded, “How could you cheat your mother?” It was out of the students’ expectation as the action was so exaggerated! How can a girl tweaked a boy’s ear like this? Almost all the performances made us excited. It’s much better than we had expected before.
As for me, this activity is beyond itself. So many pleasant memories have stuck in my minds after playing and laughing with the children. It is hard to express my special feelings. They are just my brothers and sisters, who remind me of the wonderful song <Childhood>, of the innocence we once have like them, and bring us so much energy and dynamism. With love and care, we were approaching every pure mind we had ever met. This is really a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Neo, Sorry I am late. I just returned to HK last night!
You have selected good passages for translation, however, the translator should know how to delete the unnecessary parts because to some readers they are not important and may sound tedious. Robert is correct in pointing out the inclusion of the English language is to share with CCPS' foreign friends on what we have achieved and it is important to keep them informed closely.
I have corrected the red prints. Please let me have final review when you receive papers from all the contributors. Since there are only a few pages in English I would suggest you include two languages in one disc. This time, English be the front part.
See you on 3 July. I will let you know where and time we shall meet. Please ask Leo to join if he has time because he can practice German with my husband and our German guests.
Unfortunately I did not see Robert during this trip but we talked over the phone. We've agreed to make better travelling plan next year in April.
Best, Lucy

Established in October, 2006
In 2002, the founder Ms Lucy Tsai visited a small village at the border of Guangdong / Guangxi, named Qiaotou which has a population of sixty thousand. The average annual income per family is less than RMB2,000. Obviously there is no way they can send their children to school. Tsai wondered why they did not follow the One Child One Family Policy. Nevertheless, she started to sponsor school fees so that at least young children can go to school. In 2005, another village, Hengshishui, north of Guangdong was added to the programme. A primary school in the village was in a ruin state that it could not accommodate the 200 students from the village. With the help of many kind friends and donors a 18 classrooms school were built. At that time more than 200 primary students school fee were sponsored by Tsai and her friends. Two bright university students from Yingde City were added to the list.
The Society was founded in 2006 and as a charity institute which continues to subsidize the poor farmers’ children education. Since 2007 Chinese Government has enforced 9 year mandatory education policy, all the small children are now free to go to school. This is the biggest improvement and most joyful thing we have witnessed. However, another problem emerged. With the income of the school reduced but the subsidise from the Government never come adequately to improve facilities like the hygenic toilets . Since 2007 the Society’s primary funding was focused on constructing toilets.
In 2007 the Society built two toilets for 1,212 students in XuAn and XuFeng Elementary Schools in Qiaotou village, Huaiji County. In 2008 a toilet for 490 students at the Qinmou Green School was complete.
In 2008 the Society started to sponsor university students. A Kind and old Australian friend of Lucy has sponsored generously the first 10 university students. In 2009, thanks to new donors, Ms Cheung and Ms Yip, the Society can increase 20 more university students. For this big number another poor area needs to be discovered to select candidates who could qualify the requirement. Meizhou was the next destination. A trip was made in February and a good contact with the school and the authority was established.
The repair of the Qinmou School will be complete in time to hold the summer camp in Huaiji. The Society is dedicated to continue to build toilets for the schools in need. The three toilets the Society built last year have proven very successful as the teachers and students are in joint effort to manage and to keep clean the facilities.
We encouraged the students to participate in the teaching programme to share their knowledge with the less privileged children and to appreciate what they have.

10 April, 2009
Dear all,
On 2nd November 2008, that was the first gathering since our Summer Camp in August, Uncle A.Y. suggested on this occasion to you all: how about a winter teaching programme. I was weary because you just came to the big city and you are still struggling to cope with your first year at the university, how are you going to handle the pressure. It seems a bit over demanding! But to my total surprise, those of you present raised hands high and determined, and quickly you fixed among yourselves and a date was set, 2009.01-20 -22. This is 4 days prior to Chinese New Year and in the farm you have thousand of things to do, and yet you were determined. I was impressed. Here once again I want to thank Purple for his ingenious planning and organizing skill. Also Chun Lin, the only volunteer not from this county, she is from Qingyuan City, another 380 km away, and she came one day earlier to Huaiji to join you!
What I was most concerned is the lodging and in order to save money we tried not to stay in the inn. Here I want to thank Ling Gen and his family from bottom my heart that they took in more than half of us. The rest of us were able to stay with teacher Chin. Chin’s careful management of our expenses had been very helpful. For three nights we totally took over Ling Gen’s small two wood fire burners kitchen. Every night we came back tired and hungry but as soon as we returned to Ling Gen’s home everyone regained energy, those in charge of cooking and washing were in full force at work, those lazy ones played games without shame shouting, screaming and laughing…What a beautiful picture. Those three dinners, although with one big portion of something each time (with only 3 yuan a meal what can one expect). The last meal I made an extra dish: eggs fried with green onion and proven a great success. I must say, these meals were so delicious that I will forever cherish the memory. It was not the food that counts it was the sharing, it was the energy and it was the youth. Those who had helped in cooking, washing and buying groceries etc. I want to say, you had done a good job! I sincerely hope if circumstances permit we shouldn’t spend so much time on such errands, we should reserve some quality time for better use. But again, we still have to watch our expenses.
Last but not least, I want to congratulate Uncle A.Y. for his suggestion. You did not object, suspect, surrender, withdrew nor felt uncertain, you happily accepted this mission. In the last 72 hours you have made a great impact on me by your determination, patience, compassion and industriousness. I hope you will keep in close contact with one or two of the special kids you got close to. And with your influence they should be encouraged to get to study as high as to university level like yourself.
In conclusion may I make a toast: YOU HAVE MADE IT!
There are more dedications like this in the future: ARE YOU READY!!

What a great feeling for me in these three days: “we’ve harvested a lot although we were tired.” In conclusion, how would my winter vacation be like if there was no Winter Teaching Programme.
At the beginning we were skeptical about ourselves because it was the first time that we have to stand on the platform to teach and without adequate preparation. The children were quiet, motionless but concentrated, and even a little shy. The first class was held by Xinxin on the first day. But, they changed a lot in the process. For example, we planned to visit the children’s home and have lunch with them on the first day and it was us who requested them to take us to their home. But on the second day and the third day, they took the initiative to invite us. What is more, they became talkative and initiated conversations. They then performed bravely on stage with sign language song taught by us, and danced happily on stage boys and girls together. Boys and girls usually don’t speak to each other because of the old fashion behavior in the country side. We are so thrilled to see this big changes in them.
Simple games such as calligraphy and painting, health information, social dance, which are something so ordinary for us but brought surprise to the children. An old discarded book or a simple description of the outside world seem to them like opening up a wide horizon to them. When they surrounded me and listened to my describing the life in university they were so eager to ask questions, I suddenly realized that my words were so important and powerful. At that moment, I want to stop the clock hoping that I can share with them more what I know so I can help them to fight the obstacles of being living in such remote with layer and layer of multi-mountains.
Minhong Yu said, "The real move is from that you have done something you think you cannot do ". I would like to say "The real move is also from those who do what you think they cannot do"
When we walked on the village lanes, all we can see were simple mud-brick houses, muddy roads, multi-mountains, layer and layer……Their living condition is so poor yet it never impede them to show hospitality to guests. The rice that they usually were stingy to themselves were generously served; Those chickens they have raised for half a year were offered to us. We moved to tears when we saw these opulent produce placed on table. Xinxin said, that such sight is very common in this region but we were so overwhelmed and we shall never forget for the rest of our life especially when you encountered such first hand.
The innocent smiling faces of those children had been deeply emerged in our minds and unconsciously urging us to excel ourselves. We should improve our teaching skills to give more to the children and we will do so in our next programme. In retrospect, we realized there are problems in this activity. We lacked preparation, inexperienced and unsatisfactory division of work responsibility. We learned now to make adequate preparation as early as possible, and we should lift the level of our teaching. In conclusion I believe that we can do better next time.
At any rate, together with the children we have gained a lot from each other from these precious three days. The CCPS (The Chinese Culture Promotion Society) seeds of love have planted root deep in this land of HUAIJI, and it is growing. We are proud to be part of it!
