 “Zundao: Aftermath of the Sichuan Earthquake”

Synopsis:

On May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan area in Sichuan Province experienced the most devastating earthquake since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Zundao Town which was later supported by China Vanke Group, the largest residential property developer in the country, in its recovery efforts was substantially damaged. Ninety five percent of the houses collapsed and many of its inhabitants died or were left critically injured.

Three days after the earthquake struck, a blog post by Wang Shi, Chairman of the China Vanke Group, caused considerable controversy. His comment that “General employees of Vanke should donate no more than 10 Chinese Yuan” drew a lot of public criticism. Many casted doubts on donations from the company and this incident became a major corporate crisis for both Wang Shi and the China Vanke Group – one of unprecedented severity since the company was established.

Meanwhile, even before they were able to come to terms with their loss, those who were fortunate to survive in Zundao have had to soldier on in the long road to recovery, uncertain of what the future holds…
