Here's where my head's at:

I've been working on updates to Chimera Basic, and they've grown
considerably. More stuff than I believe will (or should) fit within
the confines of the Basic canon.

So here's the edict:

Chimera Basic will see a "5th Printing," but it will consist of fixes
to typos and formatting only.

The other changes/expansions will see their way into The Chimera Core
Rules, which has been a long time coming, and (not ironically) worthy
of expansion. So the 64-page book I've been tossing about will be the
Core Rule volume.

Chimera Basic will continue to be free. Chimera Core Rules will be a
'pay-for' volume, with about 24 pages more material than Basic. No
release date set as yet, but I figure Basic is pretty much a lock at
this point. The degree of expansion I envision is really worth the
jump to the Core. Watch this space for more updates.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
-Erin

Morning Erin (and all),

I like where you're going with the 'Basic-for-free-then-pay-for-more' concept.
Giving someone the basic groundwork for a campaign or helping them solidify
something they have been working on with a solid reference manual is very
generous. Beyond that, you should be compensated for your hard work. Besides, I
am sure you will have future revisions to the Core Rules and I imagine those
updates would be sent to anyone that purchased an earlier version, so you can
tell people that not only are they buying something to go beyond Basic but this
system has never (and will never) stop evolving and they will be included in the
evolution. Maybe there's your tagline - "Chimera - the evolution of gaming".

All the best,

Colin

Hey Colin, good to hear from you!

Thanks for the feedback - what you describe is pretty much in line with my thinking. In fact, people who bought earlier versions of Chimera would get this version of the Core for free as well - consider it an upgrade.

It's true that the game keeps evolving, though I think the rules are as solid as they've ever been. Once the Core is out there, I'm hoping to evolve more fully in different game settings.

Cheers,

I think it is a good framework to go by. In fact a number of small
publishers have been doing that or some variations of it.

One good example is "Stars Without Numbers". The author placed a high
quality product up for free. He then put up adventure modules and
setting expansions for a fee. It has been getting rave reviews on
RPGnet and now he is contemplating POD.
