Dear Friends,

A Convention on “Children’s Right to Food” was held in Bhopal on 20th to 22nd January 2012. This was a follow-up to the first Children’s Right to Food Convention held in Hyderabad in April 2006.

The main purpose of this Convention was to bring together individuals and organizations with a special commitment to children’s right to food, to share experiences and plan future action.  More than 700 participants from 19 different states, who are working on this issue in various ways, took part in the Convention.

We thank all those who participated. The Convention was successful thanks to all our combined efforts.

Please find enclosed a copy of the final resolutions that emerged from the Convention. We are working on a report which will be circulated soon. During the Convention state-wise “action plans” were also discussed. The following are main action points that emerged:

·         Postcard campaign: Sending postcards to the Standing Committee opposing the draft National Food Security Bill, including the limited provisions in it for children

·         Hold state level meetings/conventions

·         Delegates to meet MPs and MLAs in the states regarding the NFSB and also CRTF

·         Raise CRTF issues in gram sabhas

·         Disseminate recommendations of the Convention widely down to the village level

·         Participate in the national RTF Convention in Delhi on 18th February

·         Conduct community level campaigns on children’s right to food, growth monitoring, malnutrition

·         Actively engage with the media on right to food issues

We have also enclosed a sample postcard and gram sabha resolution (in hindi). Please feel to use this or a modified version of this for your campaign.

Please do keep us informed of the follow up activities conducted in your area. Please do send information about activities in your area to the secretariat, by email or post.  Regular updates will be posted on the website of the “right to food campaign” (www.righttofoodindia.org) and an attempt will also be made to circulate these by email.

We look forward to your continued involvement in this campaign for children’s right to food.  And we hope to meet again soon.

With Regards,

Biraj Patnaik, Dipa Sinha, Devika Singh, Radha Holla, Sachin Jain, Samir Garg, Sejal Dand and Vandana Prasad
