Yo guys, again sorry it took a minute for me to have the time, but
here's our minutes from last week's meeting at Elizabeth's house.
You've probably already seen the message about the pepsi clean energy
grant competition with a cash reward of $50,000. In the month of july
we essentially need to contact every single soul we know that'd be
willing to help us out with this and vote the hell out of it, every
day of the month. Let's do it.
Elizabeth spoke with Brandy, I think, and the Student Environmental
Center is supportive of SSREC and agreed to contribute some funds for
us.
We came up with some essential core team roles that we'll need people
to take on in order to prepare us to host the SSREC this fall. Amongst
those we came up with for the summer are:
- Campus Recruitment (I jumped on this and we have someone else too I
forget)
- Housing (Ian'll be working on this for the time being)
- Fundraising (Elizabeth)
- Agenda / Enlisting speakers from local orgs (Macon for the time
being, I believe)
- Media (Margo and Rachel)
Regarding fundraising, we came up with a pretty big list of local
businesses that we can contact for potential sponsorship. Our basic
criteria was businesses that are green-oriented, have money, and/or
would want to advertise to a college crowd. As you know, that's a good
3/4 of the businesses in Asheville. Some that we thought of:
Restaurants/ Food:
-Green Sage
-Posana
-French Broad Food Coop
-Greenlife
-Laughing Seed
-Sunny Point
-Jack of the Wood
-Rosetta's
-Greenlight Cafe
-Chocolate Lounge
-Mellow Mushroom
-Tupelo Honey
-Coldstone
-The Hop
-World Coffee
Other stuff:
Blue ridge Biofuels
Mountain Greenworks
Green construction places
Orange Peel
Grey Eagle
Spiritex
Malaprops
Octopus's Garden
Instant Karma
Mast General Store
Westville Pub
Highland Brewing Co.
Craggie Brewing Co.
Asheville Brewing Co.
We also came up with a number of organizations for potential
speakers / workshops:
Sierra Club
Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project
Dogwood Alliance
As far as housing for the conference goes, we came up with a small
list of ideas:
2 Hostels we know of in town, one in West Asheville on Haywood and one
downtown
Unitarian Universalist Church
C3: Church in Motion
Montford Community Center
Jubilee downtown
Other churches that are pro clean energy.
Asheville Arts Center
YMCA downtown
Aaaand I think that's about it for what I got. Feel free to add in
Elizabeth or Ian.
Thanks for reading guys, talk to you next week.
