to Children in Nature Bay Area
I was thinking about what Nooshin was saying about Children's
Hospital, and what opportunities could we create there. I was also
thinking about how much the kids in my program love kale, all kinds of
kale, eating kale as they go, turning their teeth green, taking kale
home and to class, making crispy and sautéed kale. With all we know
about good nutrition and the healing powers of nature, even just
looking at nature, and how hospitals are beginning to provide more
nutritious meals for patients and guests, I propose "Kale for Kids."
Kale is incredibly easy to grow, can be grown all year, and readily
reproduces after having beautiful, yellow flowers. Could there be a
greenhouse or outdoor kale nursery at the hospital? Could a kale plant
be given to each patient, to look at in the hospital and to take home
with them? Could kale be incorporated into meals fed to patients,
families, and guests? Could some children visit the kale nursery?
Could the summer interns initiate the program?
East Bay Nursery is a great kale resource. They have lots of
varieties, a favorite of which is walking stick kale, a.k.a. giant
collard.
