Dear Friends,
Bedari has made another effort, with financial support from UNFPA, for comprehensive legislation to put an end to child marriages in Punjab. It started with focus group discussions held separately with male and female members of various communities in four districts – Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Nankana Sahab and slum areas of Lahore city. The inputs received during these discussions were shared with lawyers, and a bill was drafted “Prohibition of Child Marriages Bill 2012”. Two consultative sessions on the draft bill with stakeholders including CSOs, legal experts, policy makers and government officials were organized – one in Lahore and one in Multan. After fine tuning the draft bill in the light of the suggestions/feedback received from stakeholders in consultative sessions, the bill is ready. Here is the updated draft of the bill. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions on the draft bill to improve it further.
Additionally, we expect from Child Rights Movement (especially Punjab Chapter) to make collective efforts for the enactment and implementation of this bill right after the elections and formation of the new government.
Most Sincerely,
Safeer Ullah Khan
