Im teaching an Intro to Chemistry class in our co-op for 2nd and 3rd graders. Does anyone know of some good books that introduce concepts like matter, atoms, molecules, density, gases, liquids, and solids? Let's Read and Find Out Science type or easy reader that explains these topics.

Some books I've used in past are listed below. Many will be more read alouds for younger readers, although some strong readers might want to read them on their own, if interested. Some of them can be quite dry for those not really into the subject matter, so I often use those by just ad libbing from them, using their pictures to explain generalities of topics. Or I may just read excerpts from them. There are more read alones for younger children toward the end of the list.

Discovering Design with Chemistry is an excellent book. Wile does a good job explaining difficult concepts, and the example mathematical problems he designed are very helpful, as are the many pictures and diagrams.
Brandy, would you say that a child not yet up to the math in chemistry could learn concept with this text?
Does the text talk much about genetically modified organisms, global warming, chemical weed killers? The first text I purchased is promoting some of these things throughout. I know there is a time to read things we disagree with, but I am struggling over scheduling some of it.
Could you describe what narrations look like at this level? My soon to be 11 grader is not a child that enjoys science and especially dislikes the apologia texts we have used so far for physical science and biology. Do you know how similar this would be to the apologia text since Dr Wile first authored those books? What my son most dislikes is that he says the apologia texts have too much fluff and he wishes it would just get to the point. I am trying to make science more palatable this year and perhaps narration is a better way to go but how does that look with a subject like chemistry? Could you more specifically describe the process? Thank you.
I really appreciate this, Brandy. I plan on using text books for science from 7th grade up, adding living books to increase how much we care, just how you did here. I only have a 7th grader now, but I am saving this schedule for the future ?

This first year Geography textbook takes a holistic approach to Geography by incorporating elements of physical, human and regional geography, as well as bringing in methods and perspectives from spatial information science.. This textbook applies a fundamental geographical approach to understanding our globally changing world by looking at local processes which are linked to larger global processes and events. For example mining and its effects are a global issue and we can see how these unfold in BC. A further example is the recent apology to First Nation peoples on the residential school treatment, as similar events occur in the US, Ireland and Australia. Processes of urbanization, a phenomenon which people all over the globe are experiencing, can be seen in Vancouver with our discussion of the citys development. Geography students, indeed all first year students, need to be able to critically assess their own contexts and environments in order to properly engage with our continually globalizing world.
Canadian History: Pre-Confederation is a survey text that introduces undergraduate students to important themes in North American history to 1867. "Concept Development Studies in Chemistry" is an on-line textbook for an Introductory General Chemistry course. Each module develops a central concept in Chemistry from experimental observations and inductive reasoning. This approach complements an interactive or active learning teaching approach.
