It even happens with films that are subtitled in the language the speech is in. I assume what happens is that the subtitles match the original script, but with rewrites and ad-libbing during the performances, the spoken words get changed, but the script never does.

Timing should be pretty good. If not, there is always the option of doing Heavy Import from the video tools. (Which preserves the timestamps). Transcribe the new lesson and copy the timestamps from old lesson or replace the old lesson text with the transcribed text.

Dubs must match when the person is speaking or appears to be. This may mean that a speaker says a single word, but the translation would be a phrase in another language. This means the dub will be very short, but the sub may be longer.

Subs on the other hand are limited by the size of the screen. And they must also take in account reading speed. In the above example, if the speaker says one word, which would translate into a phrase in another language, if the time before the next speaker is short, there is not enough time to read a long subtitle.

This is actually a pretty smart solution for a unnecessary problem that Netflix causes (in all languages that I know of). It probably was constructed this way, before transcription was an option. EDIT: after seeing the explanation of kindl, I have to admit, there is more to this than I thought. Thanks for the explain @kindl !

I remember opening karaoke mode and not having an option to turn the translation on. Inconveniences that quickly add up if used regularly. You start to think, where is the bang for my buck? How can I make these hours count? Why is LingQ reader the only beneficial display mode? Is there an opportunity here?

Thanks for coming back to me. To clarify, when I have automatic, I get no subtitles but when select English I get subs for English and French. The latter makes sense, but it would seem to me that automatic should provide subs for the non native language.

To change the default subtitles language in Settings, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio > Subtitle Language, then choose the language that you want. If you don't want automatic subtitles and you're using an Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio, then turn off Automatic Subtitles. If you're using a smart TV or streaming device, go to Settings > General, then turn off Automatic Subtitles.

To make sure we're on the same page, it sounds like you're saying that you have Automatic selected for your subtitles, and you see subtitles in English regardless of the language spoken in the show/movie, correct?

If so, this is normal. The 'Automatic' setting will use the default language option to determine which language the subtitles are in, so that is what the "automatic" aspect is referring to rather than it changing during playback based on the language spoken in the content.

Anyone else experience this issue? When I use my phone to watch movies on Crave through the Ignite app, it's in English. When I cast it onto my TV via chromecast, it automatically turns French. I tried asking Rogers tech support but doesn't seem like they know how to fix this.

Is it the actual program that you are watching that is playing in French or is it French subtitles that you are seeing?
Are you noticing this when you cast any other channel or only with Crave?

I just turned ours on, randomly, to TF1 which was showing some travel programme and found sub-titles without difficulty (not that they followed the French dialogue all that well which is mildly annoying).

I watched two programmes on tv3 last evening: the first was around the hunting/scavenging activities of an elderly gent who gallumphed around the rocky shallows of the Normandy coast wearing what looked like a single-breasted business suit, socks and sensible shoes, often submerging himself in the seawater to emerge, dripping wet with his serge trousers and jacket clinging to his frame, with a crab, arraigne or homard in his bare hand.

The next was the exploits of a young female vegan eco-warrior in the sticks who saves various creatures from the hunt, and fights a dangerous running battle with the local chasse. She spoke a young excitable argot that defeated my understanding even with subtitles, but her adventures running a large animal rescue venture and a huge cloture - often violated by the chasseurs, was inspiring, especially as she took her three-year old toddler with her as an extra vigilante. I could understand him, even with his dummy in

As has been covered very many times, father in law has just gotten sky stream but needs subtitles Ive followed the power off fix a few times with no success. The next fix is to complete a master reset, which I'll do tonight.

@SuperJohnG What issue are you having with the subtitles. The way the subtitles work and are activated will depending on the source app of where the broadcast is being watched. For example turning on subtitles for live channels and Skys own on demand programmes is different from turning on subtitles for shows within IPlayer or ITV X.

@SuperJohnG Before you take any drastic action like a factory reset I assume you have turned the subtitles on at Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles. This will give subtitles for Sky programmes but the Apps (iPlayer, ITVX etc) all need subtitles turned on from within the app. Unfortunately each app achieves this by different procedures.

Also, subtitles can be turned on or off for specific programmes you are currently watching by selecting the button with the 3 white dots (just below the power button) on your remote. Your selection will turn off when you change channels. If there is no subtitle option it means the specific programme is does not have them available.

@SuperJohnG1 I would have suggested escalating your post but unfortunately Sky will only talk to the account holder whether by phone or an online chat. Consequently this option would not work. Hopefully someone who uses subtitles will be able to offer you some additional information.

@kp50 Check your settings at Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles. This will give subtitles for Sky programmes but the Apps (iPlayer, ITVX etc) all need subtitles turned on from within the app. Unfortunately each app achieves this by different procedures.

If you do find a solution (whether through escalation or not) please post it back here as I am aware that some others are having a similar issue. In particular @SuperJohnG1 on another thread but his post can't be escalated.

@SuperJohnG1 I have posted to another similar thread and tagged you so that you can find it. I don't feel comfortable escalating your post as I imagine I would be in breach of Superuser rules as I am aware that you are not the account holder.

This has been an ongoing problem ever since the puck was introduced and it is incredibly irritating for people such as myself who rely on them. All my 7 pucks (6 original and 1 replacement) had to have a factory reset.
