Cornet Espoir (Cornet Marl) is the protagonist of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. A plucky young peasant girl from a backwater village, she sets out on a journey to rescue the Prince of Marl from the evil witch, Marjoly.
Cornet is a young lady with strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, and a light complexion. It is commented on in-game that she is supposedly hefty and 'ogre-like,' but all official sources list her as closer to being severely underweight rather than overweight.
Cornet's village girl outfit consists of a checked hairband, white turtleneck sweater, and blue vest with a plaid skirt. She also wears olive green tights with white ankle tube socks and boots. Her accessories of jewelry consist of Teardrop shaped green earrings and a green pendant necklace.
In her adventure outfit she wears a balloon-like, cream beret with red and orange diamonds patterning it and a matching tunic/dress with similar embellishments. She wears a red turtleneck over this tunic, black tights, and loose socks beneath it and a blue poncho/wrap over the top of all else. Brown leather gloves and boots are also included as well as goggles sitting at the crown of her head.
Cornet is a calm, cheerful girl. A bit of a daydreamer in her youth, she quite often slips into fantasies about finding her prince, leaving her unaware of the world around her until snapped out of it. Having lost her mother at a young age and her father before she was born, she's understandably touchy about the topic of parents being broached. She shows exceptional empathic tendencies for those around her be the human or puppet or monster in rare cases such as Ellie. As protagonist of a very lighthearted, comedically-toned game, she's prone to snarky remarks both in spoken dialogue and in item/interest spot flavor text.
As an adult in Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess, she maintains her calm demeanor and has further matured into the role of the stern-but-fair mother. She's aware of Kurusale's rebellious, tomboyish streak, and though she doesn't baby her daughter as her father does, she doesn't entirely discourage it, having the wisdom to leave useful adventuring items in places she's sure that will end up explored.
Kururu is Cornet's main puppet and her closest ally. The pair of them bicker and tease one another frequently, but their close bond means it rarely affects their relationship. When one takes it too far, both will seek to make up after a short period of time. Kururu encourages Cornet constantly, telling her to "take the initiative!" and cheering her on/assisting her during fights. Her love and support is Cornet's strength throughout her youth.
As shown in Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom, Enough heartfelt love was poured into Kururu as an individual that she was able to become a separate entity from Cherie, and, with assistance from her former self's holy magic, the puppet was reanimated to stay by Cornet's side once again.
Etoile is Cornet's childhood friend. The pair of them grew up together in Orange Village playing in the forest surrounding the area very frequently. As the two grew older, they drifted apart somewhat, and Etoile began to treat Cornet with disdain for being 'homely' and poor. Despite this, the strong bond they shared remains at the core with both girls looking out for one another on the journey to rescue Ferdinand and remaining close friends well into their adulthood.
Cornet's ideal prince and true love. They first met in the Wonder Woods, when Ferdinand appeared to rescue Cornet from Myao's dragon. Despite her longing for a prince of her own, she was shown to see beyond Ferdinand's title to the man he truly is, and the two became infatuated with one another after Cornet tied with Etoile in the Miss Marl Contest. When Ferdinand was petrified and stolen away, Cornet set out on a journey to rescue him that culminated in them sharing a kiss. Shortly after, the two were wed and started their family.
Cornet's grandfather and primary carer throughout her youth. Mustaki is an old puppet-maker and tinkerer that happily fixes Cornet's puppets for her when she needs and comments upon the special powers of her horn. He loves his granddaughter dearly and, despite his age, is shown to do all he can to support her on her journey. His legacy inadvertently gets Cornet attacked by three puppets (Chiba, Duke, and Albatross), though also leads to her being able to gain closure about her mother's death.
The conceited klutz of a witch that kidnaps Prince Ferdinand and sends Cornet on her journey to rescue him as well as the three bumbling underlings that attempt to obstruct her journey. Despite their 'evil' ways, Cornet is never particularly frightened by the Marjoly family and, though they outclass her in strength and magical might, her intelligence and bonds with others lead to her succeeding over them again and again and again and again.
The minister of Marl and a force of major antagonism in Cornet's journey. When the two initially meet, he mistakes her for a suitor bringing him a gift but quickly shows himself to be a disgusting and perverse man. When Cornet defends herself from his advances, he accuses her of being an assassin leading to her fleeing the castle. He recognizes Cornet when she wins the Miss Marl Contest but is unable to have her imprisoned due to the interference of Queen Siegrind and Ferdinand.
Cornet's only child and a troublesome, tomboyish daughter that takes a lot after her mother. Cornet is noted as a strict parent to her, but the two nevertheless share a very close and loving relationship. When Princess Kururu hopes to marry, Cornet is in support of her choice, while Ferdinand is against it. She believes in her daughter despite her ditzy nature and questionable fashion sense. The original Kururu puppet was passed down to her and can be found in her bedroom during Rhapsody II, and she is named for Cornet's best friend and mother both.
Rhapsody is the child of a Human father and a Liringlas (Skysinger) mother. She is a talented Singer, healer and herbalist and has been taught the magical lore of Naming. Besides being independent and strong-willed, she is also extremely compassionate and always goes out of her way to help people. She and Achmed are sometimes described as opposites or two sides of the same coin.
Rhapsody was born as Amelia Rhapsody Turner, nicknamed Emily, in the farming village of Merryfield on the island of Serendair. She was the sixth child and only daughter of a human farmer and his Liringlas wife.
On the eve of her 14th birthday, she met a boy known as Sam . Sam was actually Gwydion of Manosse, a prince from nearly 1,400 years in the future, brought to Serendair by Meridion in order to alter history. Sam and Emily quickly fell in love, but Sam vanished and was brought back to his own time. Shortly afterwards, armed soldiers entered Merryfield, looking for a strange outlander. Emily, fearing for Sam's life, fled Merryfield to warn him, but lost the guards in the city of Easton.
During her time as a prostitute one client in particular, called Michael, became obsessed with Rhapsody. He grew as a power in the area in which she lived. Rhapsody was completing her studies when a minion of said monster tried to fetch her back to him. In eluding Michael's men she met 'The Brother' and Grunthor, adopting them to convince the town guard they were her brothers and in doing so accidentally renamed 'The Brother' as 'Achmed the Snake.' In renaming Achmed, she inadvertently released him from the slavery he had been suffering under the power of the F'dor Tsoltan, a demonic entity bent on destroying the world. In order to ensure that no harm would come of his renaming, Achmed took Rhapsody with him to Sagia and into the tree, leading her along the Axis Mundi away from the destruction of Serendair. Rhapsody remained convinced that he did this to save her from Michael, not seeing his true intentions.
When Rhapsody, Achmed, and Grunthor emerge from the root, they have no idea where they are. Rhapsody, as the only one of the fellowship who could blend in among humanity, approached the Filid Tanist - Khaddyr - who took her to Llauron the Invoker, the leader of the Filid order. Llauron, immediately calculating that Rhapsody's breath-taking beauty (enhanced by her mystical journey through the world's heart), could be used to his advantage, took her in while Rhapsody waited for the moment when she could reconnect with Achmed and Grunthor. Rhapsody then learns that the Island she called home, Serendair, was actually destroyed in a cataclysm some 1500 years before, and was buried beneath the sea. Llauron begins to suspect that Rhapsody is not of his time, but still teaches her much of the lore of this new land. She learns as much as she can, suspecting that Achmed will find it useful. While there, she learns of a land once called Canrif, now called Ylorc, the present home of a race of humanoids called the Firbolg, or simply the Bolg. When Achmed and Grunthor return to her, she tells them of this place and its location; the Three then decide to journey there, and see if Canrif could become habitable.
