nv1b> By my calculations you'll be the only one there, operating at your usual leisurely pace of 368 WPM!

Speaking of ultra high speed operating, I'm curious who else besides Tom W4BQF in the group is known for blazingly fast copy.  Who among us can easily sustain 70, or more?

Fred Joy can do that - he used to be W0RSW, but now is a 5 call.  He is a real old timer!

...and while they are probably not members of CFO, don't forget there are clubs for HSC, VHSC, SHSC and EHSC (read High, Very, Super and Extremely High Speed Clubs), where 60 WPM is a minimal requirement.   I believe some of these clubs were operational before CFO came into being.

Yes, but I think you will find the European high speed clubs talk about ‘characters per minute’ and not ‘words per minute’. Don’t matter because in my opinion all of this should be strictly for the fun of it. There are no ‘bragging rights’!

Not that I am hugely QRQ, but copying fast just does not interest or
impress me. Sending fast, precisely, and with uniqueness (especially
with a swing) on a semi-automatic telegraph key - no keyers or
keyboards - is what I admire about the senior roosters in the CFO
house.

John,

I looked you up in QRZ - don't forget to renew that WD4IIF ticket this week.
Mine has to be renewed soon, also.

I knew the original guys who started the CFO, and it was always about being
able to operate, with good CW, at 40 WPM, minimum. Although they all used
keyers, & some were starting to use boards, some of them could also operate
a bug. [Key word - "operate". When you go the operating room, you want
someone who 'operates' - not just cuts.] Swinging a bug is something to
avoid - not something to be proud of.

When the old CFO group started Bug Night [Thursdays?] it gave the bug-gers a
night of their own. The 'bug tune-up' - with everyone sending splatter-dits
'until the chickens came home' was funny the first time - but became
routine. Illegal, too - I'm sure. Some of us found other things to do those
nights. Shovel out the barn-yard?

As a kid, in 1951, I was looking for the best keyer circuit to build. After
handling TFC with W4KFC, Vic Clark, one night I asked him what kind of keyer
he used. He pretended to be insulted, and told me which Vibroplex he was
using. Years later, when I heard him on nets, & in DX tests, I listened
carefully to see if he still used a bug. Some nights I was unable to decide.

A few years ago, I complimented one CFO member on his fine fist [not a fine
_BUG_ fist, but a fine fist]. He said he had practiced hard years ago - on &
off air - to qualify for the CFO at 40 WPM - SEND & RX. He was accurate
enough to even be copied on some CRTs.

If this had been a bug-club, most of us would never have thought of
joining - nor would we have had the 2 nominations.

There is an 80 y/o OT ham who never operated CW, but designed & built fine
paddles since college. He is now practicing CW, & I hope to help him get up
to some decent speed. I won't be able to sponsor him in CFO soon - but this
shows us why TWO [or more] sponsors should be required.

If it is just QRS CW that is of interest, there are QRS clubs around, where
even straight keys [& foot-switches ??] are tolerated.

Hi Tom,

Just got back from the beach - after being delayed for 12 hours waiting for
a ford to go down sufficiently to drive through - and discovered your pack
of letters and other material in the mailbox.

I've had a quick look through it. The contents are absolutely
fascinating! I had heard of the existence of some of these letters, but
had never seen them. They also gave me a much better understanding of Bill
Eitel's aims in founding the "5 star club", which I had never
appreciated. Also his disagreement with Wintle, and the FOC, which was
news to me.

I'll have to peruse them in more detail. More when I have time - I have
started teaching again, and am engrossed in commencing another semester
teaching network theory.

Thanks again, and do keep in touch. The continuing flood of emails
triggered by the resuscitation of the CFO are also fascinating!
