Dear Robin:

How can I view the Sustainable Yard Tour videos?

Whether you visited the yards or not, there's lots to learn and much to enjoy in the videos. Each video is just about five minutes long and features the yard hosts sharing information and inspiration - and more beautiful views of their gardens. Find these videos and more on GGW's You Tube Channel.

We are looking for inspiring yards for next year's tour. Please contact Saima Abbasi if you want to suggest your yard or a neighbor's.

“In the past, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty. Now they have to support life, sequester carbon, feed pollinators and manage water.

FEATURED EVENTS
Go Green Winnetka's
Native Plant Sale
Sept. 11, 9 - 11am

Fall is a great time to plant native plants. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just get started, Go Green Winnetka’s fall native plant sale will provide you with the plants and information you need to create your very own native garden, pollinator habitat, and more. (If you have any garden space in an alley behind your home, now's a good time to make it a habitat haven!)

The sale will be an in-person event, with no pre-orders. Information and a list of available plants can be found here. Cash, check, Zelle, and credit cards will be accepted. (Or ask your local nursery for natives you can plant in the fall.)

Go Green Winnetka is looking for volunteers for this event. If you would like to volunteer to help make this first Fall Native Plant Sale a success please email them.

Don't Miss the

Wilmette Solar Tour!

Addresses and solar system information will be available several days before the event.

 Go Green Reads Presents
"The Fate of Food"
Featuring
Author Amanda Little

Sept. 20, 7 - 8pm

Join us for a special Go Green Reads with author Amanda Little who will lead a discussion of her book, "The Fate of Food: What We'll Eat in a Bigger, Hotter, Smarter World." The book is a fascinating story of the sustainable food revolution and winner of the 2019 Nautilus Book Award. Go Green Reads is a lively—and growing—virtual book discussion group that aims to raise environmental awareness one compelling book at a time! Go Green Reads is offered through a collaboration between Go Green Northfield, Go Green Wilmette, and Go Green Winnetka, in partnership with The Book Stall and the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District.

Gillson Park Habitat Workday

Sunday, Sept. 12

9am - 11am

Join us for a work day to help maintain this beautiful and important habitat located at the north end of Gillson Park in Wilmette. Meet fellow volunteers by the wide path down to the beach in the middle of the habitat area.

Come when you can and leave when you need to - even 15 minutes is a help! Bring a friend and visit while you garden. Children welcome.

Save the Date: Gillson Park Habitat Fall Festival, Oct. 17, Time TBD

Beach Plastic 5 Buckets
Final Beach Clean Up

Sept. 18

9am - 11am

Join us for our final beach clean up of the season at Gillson Park. Look for the Go Green Wilmette table at the south end of the park near the diagonal beachfront parking. We recommend reusable gloves – not single use plastic gloves - to protect yourself. Please bring your own bucket or container. You can also do a clean up anytime you are at the beach.

Reducing plastic use in your daily life and supporting restrictions on plastic helps protect beaches and waterways.

Help Us Find Wilmette's

Oldest and Largest Trees!

GGW is partnering with the Village to find our oldest and largest trees. If you know of one, please let Saima know where it is.

GOOD NEWS
Recycling Update

We are pleased to report that clear plastic clamshell containers are recyclable in Wilmette's curbside program if there is a #1 symbol on them. Rinse and close containers before recycling.

WORTH A REMINDER

Gas Powered Leaf Blower Ban Remains in Place Until Oct. 1.

If you see your service - or any yard care company - using gas-powered leaf blowers this month, please ask them to comply with Wilmette's ban from May 15 to Sept. 30. Call 847/256-1200 to report violations or email our code enforcer at blume...@wilmette.com.

Talk to your yard service company about continuing to use electric equipment through the fall and blowing less for a cleaner and quieter Wilmette. Leave the leaves to provide habitat throughout the year. Ask them to mulch your leaves on your yard and put them on garden beds or under trees for mulch. Keep the leaves to use in your backyard compost bin.

More and more communities are restricting leaf blowers. To learn why, read this compelling letter and watch this short video on the topic.
