Library hosts International Fair
The Indian Trails Public Library invites the public to discover the
diversity of their own community by attending its first International
Fair Saturday afternoon.
The event will feature a variety of musicians and feature ethnic food
from local restaurants like Pita Inn and Wa-Pa-Ghetti's Pizza. There
will also be plenty of crafts and other children's activities to help
them learn about different cultures.
Performers include Nelson Sosa, a Latin guitarist, who will perform
folk songs from different regions of Central and South America and show
the subtle difference and similarities of the music from different
regions. Ron Surace will direct the big-band orchestra, In Full Swing,
and students from the Polish School in Wheeling will perform
traditional Polish dances. Pavasito Dandyvni, a clown and balloonist,
will also make an appearance. He is a new Wheeling resident and has
performed his act around the world and at Navy Pier.
The library will also show off collections of books and other materials
reflecting the diverse community for those who might want to learn more
about the music they hear or the food they taste at the International
Fair.
Chris Medjo-Me-Zengue, the library's multicultural coordinator, said
the library has hosted events displaying specific cultures, but this is
the first time the library has put together a fair featuring many
different cultures found throughout the library district.
"One way to discover these cultures is to bring them to the library,"
he said. "We see the diversity of the community, and we would like to
show it off to everybody else."
The International Fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at
the library, located at 355 Schoenbeck Road in Wheeling. The event is
free and open to the public.
