For Immediate Release: Our Lady of Guadalupe Denounces E-Verify System

Our Lady of Guadalupe is calling for a press conference to denounce
the E-Verify Program that the federal government started to implement
on Sept. 17 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Mission, 3442 W. 26th
St., at 2:00 p.m. on September 17, 2009

This E-Verify Electronic Employment Verification System became
affective Sept. 8, requiring all federal contractors and sub-
contractors to verify the identity of all newly-hired employees,
including both citizens and non-citizens. The sweeping mandatory
legislation was crafted by the Bush White House but is being
implemented by the Obama Administration, which signed off on it in
July of 2009. According to numbers released by the Department of
Homeland Secuirty, the system will will screen 1 in 4 new hires in the
United States. Legislation is currently pending to require all private
companies to also implement the system; additionally they are
considering a requirement to retroactively submit all individuals
currently employed through the system.

The system entails a joint venture by the Social Security
Admininstration and the Department of Homeland Security to filter
identification provided by new employees in filling out their I9
forms. Picture Identification will then be fed through the database.

Father Jose Landaverde says, “If this law is to be applied to any
business receiving federal funding, then a huge number of people will
lose their jobs. This legislation is geared toward creating a huge
database of all working people and with all of the federal government
intervention as part of the financial bailout, what comes next? How
else will this database be used and what other areas of peopless lives
will have to be verified by the government?”
