Chicago undocumented youth arrested continue campaign for the DREAM Act


After being arrested in Washington D.C. these youth speak out about their participation in a peaceful act of civil disobedience to urge congress to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year.


What: The ten undocumented Chicago youth that participated in the July 20th, 2010 civil disobedience action to urge congress to pass the DREAM Act speak out about the action, their experiences, and what is next for them and the immigrant rights movement.

When: Today, Tuesday July 27th, 2010 at 10:30 am.

Where: Plaza Tenochtitlan on the corner of Blue Island, 18th st and Loomis.(pilsen)
 
Who: Members of the Immigrant Youth Justice League and allies from the community fighting for passage of the DREAM Act. The 10 undocumented youth who participated in the civil disobedience in Washington DC: Uriel Sanchez, Ireri Unzueta, Reyna Wences, Andrea Rosales, Edy Dominguez, David Morales, Jesus Morales, Tania Unzueta, Lulu Martinez, Nicolas Gonzales.

Why: July 20th was the second time in US history that undocumented youth have purposefully put their lives at risk through peaceful acts of civil disobedience to show how broken the immigration system is and to fight for the rights of our communities.

The 22 young people from around the country, all undocumented, participated in a sit in at the offices of different Senators in Washington DC to urge them to help pass the DREAM Act as soon as possible and as first step towards a more just immigration reform. Nine of those arrested where youth from Chicago.  


The Immigrant Youth Justice League is a Chicago-based organization representing undocumented youth in the demand for immigrant rights through education, resource-gathering and youth mobilization.
