OK MCN READERS,

The quote in the byline was a comment that my late mother, Juaquina Medellin de Perez made, after I had related to her the results of a major community victory in preventing the closing of the University of Illinois Hospital back in 1989.. The Uof I trustees had already voted to close the hospital, and along with a large group of university doctors, nurses, and community activists, we had succeeded in defating this action down in Springfield with the support of the State Legislature.

As I related to my mother how the whole "fait accompli" scenario had been reversed by the intense opposition to the closing of the UIH, she became pensive, and made the comment..."es cierto lo que dicen, que en la union si hay fuerza...." "it's true what they say, that in unity there is strength...."

A lot of people were convinced that the University Hospital would be closed. But we prevailed.

It is the year 2010. In several months the Mexican community will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexico's independence from the Spanish Holy Roman Empire.

Led by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a small group of revolutionaries had been planning  a rebellion against the Spanish Crown. On September 15th, 1810...Father Hidalgo led the people in the rebellion that eventually won independence for Mexico.

Mexico has struggled over the last 200 years to maintain her sovereignty and democracy. In 1862, the european powers under Napoleon III had occupied Mexico over a dispute of international debt. Benito Juarez had negotiated a financial settlement with the British, but the French decided to occupy Mexico and install Maximilian of Hapsburg as the Emperor of Mexico.

The people of Mexico were once again forced to take up arms in defense of their young nation. And on May 5th 1862, near the strategic city of Puebla, Mexican farmers, ranchers, civilians, and soldiers defeated the elite crack troops of the French army in the now famous Batalla de Puebla!

Throughout Mexican history, the people have proven time and again the wisdom of my mother's words...."que en la union, si hay fuerza...".

Now in 2010, Mexicans in Chicago face a new challenge. It is over the political destiny of our community and who will lead our people in this second decade of the 21st century.

We will continue to allow the old corrupt politcal forces of the 20th century - the Daley/Burke/Lipinski - machine to dominate the politics  and decisions that impact on our community - or will we rise up once again - and defeat these forces of political corruption and cronyism, that are responsible for the miserable conditions that afflict our community.

We have an excellent opportunity in the next three weeks, to send a loud message across this state and across this nation.....that the Mexican community of Chicago is taking charge of it's own political destiny and will no longer be under the heels of the corrupt DALEY/BURKE/LIPINSKI machine!!!

Can I get an "amen"? Loud ones please!!!!

Ok, so what do we have to do to rid ourselves of the yoke of the corrupt political powers that dominate our community? Simple.....vote for the following candidates in the primary election going on right now.....

Jorge Mujica for congressman of the 3rd district

Rudy Lozano, Jr. for State Rep in the 23rd district

Jesus "Chuy' Garcia for Cook County commissioner in the 7th district

Adolfo Mondragon for State Senator in the 2nd district

I am exhorting all of you to vote, volunteer and financially support these election campaigns.

It's early voting till January 28th. If you are downtown, go to 69 W. Washington and vote at the Chicago Board of Elections.

I am also calling on the candidates I am supporting, to work together, to form a "UNITED FRONT" in these last weeks of the campaign. Hold press conferences, campaign together, send your precinct workers out there with flyers supporting these candidacies.

En la union...si hay fuerza!!! Together we can defeat the corrupt political Daley/Burke/Lipinski machine. Working together, we can win a major victory for our community and for all surrounding communities in our city.

STATE SENATOR RICKEY HENDON, CANDIDATE FOR ILLINOIS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR IS ENDORSING JORGE MUJICA'S CAMPAIGN FOR CONGRESS.

Rickey Hendon is a good man...and a visionary!!!

The MCN endorses Rickey Hendon for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois!!!!

ADELANTE GENTE...HASTA LA VICTORIA.....SI SE PUEDE!!!!
