This morning undocumented immigrants on hunger strike won another impressive victory, securing an agreement with Christ Medical Hospital similar to that won with Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The agreements call for equal access to organ transplants for the undocumented and uninsured.
As a recent Counterpunch article notes, "One in five organs used in U.S. transplant programs like Northwestern's come from uninsured people, while barely 1% of those organs go to uninsured people who need them. People without documents are estimated conservatively to donate organs at more than three times the rate [that] they receive them."
Tomorrow night one of the key spokespeople for the struggle, Father Jose Landaverde, will discuss these victories and how they intersect with the struggles for immigrant rights and health care for all. Watch it on the Gay Liberation Network's live call-in program on CAN TV, cable channel 21 in Chicago, at 6:30 PM.
