Panel, cultural event, and fundraiser:

E-Verify is an immigration enforcement tool that the current administration of ICE has greatly expanded. Previously, the No-Match letters gave us a window of time to mount a campaign. E-Verify gives only 10 days to workers to probe their legal status, and if failing to do so, they send the workers signed registrations to Homeland Security.

Tens of thousands of families, native born or immigrant, have been hurt by employers that insist to use E-Verify to fire workers in response to union organizing or the devastating effects of the economic crisis. E-Verify targets undocumented workers, but it hurts us all.

Unfortunately, it is not yet clear for workers and immigrant rights organization how to deal with this fulminating attack. Workers, unions and immigrant rights organizations must come together to figure out the best strategy to fight back.

The Chicago Community and Workers Rights is a grassroots workers’ group, which receives hundreds of cases of immigrant dismissed through the E-Verify program here in Chicago, and is seeking how to respond to it.

The cultural event will include local artist such as Fandanguero, Luis Badillo, Chuy Negrete, Ramón Marino, and others, accompanied of food and drinks.
