The SHUT DOWN ICE Action will be carried on as planned as a response to state violence and the suppression of free speech.

Chicago IL - Organizers of the Shut Down ICE event scheduled for today (Monday, May 21) were notified by Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr's chief of staff that the Congressman and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E) officials have declared pro-immigrant and anti-NATO advocates a security threat.

 

The Shut Down ICE event is in response to a “public meeting” called by Jesse Jackson Jr. and ICE about a planned Immigrant Detention Camp in Crete, just South of Chicago. Upon learning of the planned action, officials postponed the meeting in the last minute, citing security concerns. In response organizers of Shut Down ICE stated: “this an effort to repress political expression and avoid real public debate about Immigrant Detention. We are not canceling today's peaceful action; we will take our response to ICE”.

 

“They terrorize and attack our communities, and then call us a security threat” stated the organizers. “Yesterday we witnessed a wave of state violence against peaceful protesters. Immigrant communities have been under attack for years. In response we will confront state violence and repression with nonviolent action”.
