May Day March for workers’ rights

WHAT: May 1st Immigrant and Labor march and rally to demand a halt to: I-9 Ice Audits and to the E-verify program.
WHO: Immigrant workers, their families and community leaders.
WHERE: Universidad Popular, 2801 S Hamlin Ave. Little Village, Chicago.
WHEN: Tuesday April 24th, 2012 at 10 am.
“The E-verify program is the labor death for undocumented workers,” says Gildardo Mercado, organizer with Chicago Community and Workers Rights (CCWR), “it is, literally killing our people.”
Chicago Community and Workers Rights (CCWR), D’ Mateo Empowerment Center, Northwest Community Services and Workers Support, Fundacion de Defensa Comunitaria and Immigration Committee of Universidad Popular invites the media community to hear the stories of honest family people who are losing their Jobs, companies denying to them right to work and to organize, due to the abuse, by employers and the authorities, E-verify.
“We want the public to know how people who have been working for 5 to 20 years with a company, building it up and making their employers’ profits grow, are suddenly thrown to the street. And the employers knew for long time the status of his/her workers. Sometimes, ICE makes an I-9 audit, but many times the employers just want to lower labor costs, or bust labor organizing inside the company.”
The workers and families who will speak are preparing themselves to participate in the May Day labor march and rally to demand the elimination of the E-verify and a halt to the I-9 audits, and would like to invite the immigrant community in Chicago to participate with them.
