COALITION OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS CALL FOR PRESIDENTIAL VOTE ABSTENTION IN
2012
In a press conference, the Chicago Latino Coalition-2011, the
March 10 Movement, the Immigrant United Front , Concern Puerto Rican Voters,
and other community leaders will appeal to the immigrant community to come out
to vote en masse in the 2012 party primaries and the presidential elections in
2012, but do not vote for president.
The organizers argue that President Obama has planned a series of meetings with
people from the Latino entertainment industry, and other characters, to help
him clean up his image in the Latino community. “It's an insult to our
community for Obama to mount a public relations campaign expecting immigrant families
to forget that rather than immigration reform his administration has deported
almost a million immigrants. President Obama says he can do nothing for us, so
we will do nothing for him,” said Jorge Mújica.
On his part Omar Lopez
said, “No massive marches nor civil disobedience nor lobbying federal
lawmakers, nor the appeal to the moral sense of the nation, have produced the
desired results. Rather, the repression against immigrant communities has
grown. This tells us that although we are in the right and we have done a good
job in documenting the benefits that immigrants bring to this nation, the
powerful have not felt the need to change its position.”
The leaders will declared the start of a
campaign designed to convince political parties that it’s better to document
those “without papers” than to lose the presidency in the nation. “We're
going to our brothers and sisters who are citizens to help us in this process
of persuasion, we have no alternative” concluded Carlos Pérez,
from the Mayan Calendar News.
