Activists and community members respond to attack by "advocacy groups" and the Obama administration

When: Thursday, June 5 2014; starting 4:30 PM
Where: 55 E Jackson Blvd

What: Chicago, IL - Activists and community members stage a protest denouncing the collusion of NGO's with the political parties in terrorizing immigrant communities. They also accuse organizations like ICIRR and SEIU of silencing the voices of grassroots groups that seek to expose this collusion, going so far as to call the police on activists who disagree with them.

Background: Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are two of the influential non-profit advocacy groups that have been promoting Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) as a "path to legalization" for undocumented immigrants. However, CIR in the form of S744 and the House "principles" are anti-immigrant. This is not an immigrant rights legislation, it is an immigration enforcement bill: it calls for increased border militarization, increased enforcement and criminalization of immigrants, and for keeping migrants locked into a limbo non-status. This past week, SEIU along with other national organizations have urged President Obama to NOT issue a moratorium on deportations, as part of a political game to promote CIR and to promote their own political ambitions. This directly undermines a national effort to halt deportations by executive power. It is part of an ongoing pattern of powerful NGO's pushing their financial and political interest at the expense of millions of people.

Organizers of the event are planning to go to the headquarters of ICIRR and SEIU to deliver a special message. They will also march to two downtown jails -- Metropolitan Corrections Center and Immigration and Customs Enforcement  -- to expose the cooperation between the not-for-profit sector, the police and immigration enforcement.
