Chicago IL – The Senate is poised to vote on S.744, Border Enforcement,
Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act in the next two days. Immigrant
Rights advocates, the Migrant Justice
Coalition and Moratorium On
Deportations Campaign reject and denounce
publicly Senate immigration reform bill as an “anti-immigrant” bill.
WHAT: Press
conference in response to key vote on immigration in the Senate
WHERE: 3442 W. 26th St. (Little Village): Our Lady
of Guadalupe Mission
WHEN: Thursday,
June 27 at 11:00 AM
In a statement directed to Chicago’s Immigrant Rights groups
and activists, Moratorium On Deportations Campaign and Migrant Justice
Advocates state:
“The bill uses the
pretext of Immigration Reform to unleash the largest domestic militarization
program in the history of the US. A total of at least $42 billion are set aside
to militarize the entire region that is within 100 miles of the US-Mexico
border; to deploy 20,000 extra troops plus the National Guard at the border; to
fund drones and other military equipment and to give Homeland Security
exceptional powers in all federal lands and indigenous nations. The bill would
also implement a national E-Verify system and extend the criminalization of
immigrants, establishing quotas for interior enforcement and incentivizing the
expansion of Poli-Migra programs. Instead of legalization, the bill offers a
dangerous and misleading probationary status and a new merit-based visa system
that will only benefit a few privileged categories of immigrants at the expense
of the many. This is not an immigration reform bill rather, it’s an
anti-immigrant bill” (Moratorium On Deportations Campaign)
Also: Moratorium On Deportations Campaign will make public an
educational video entitled: Immigration Reform 101 – an in-depth analysis
of the key provisions which the immigrant community has been misled about: connecting
Militarization, RPI, Path to Citizenship and Enforcement.
